    1. George Augustus MILLER - Ballarat 1860-2
    2. Batley, Nicholas
    3. Good morning to everyone on the list I am researching the family of my great-great-grand-uncle and -aunt, George Augustus MILLER and Matilda MILLER (nee EGGERS). George and Matilda married in Geelong in 1853, and lived in the Geelong area in the mid-1850s, then Ballarat in the late 1850s and early 1860s, and then finally moved on to Melbourne in the mid-1860s. I have known for some time that George Augustus MILLER was, among other things, a publican during his time in Ballarat. I am now following up a new lead on this information, and I am hoping some of you may be able to provide me with information or at least some suggestions as to where to look. I have recently discovered that George Augustus MILLER was in partnership in a hotel in Ballarat with a Michal GANNON during 1861 and possibly earlier. Unfortunately I don't know the name of the hotel. Can anybody on the list please tell me whether there is a list of hotels, or a list of hotel licensees, for Ballarat in the 1860-1862 period ? Alternatively, are there any trade directories for Ballarat for the 1860s ? Any ideas or suggestions for tracking down the name of the hotel, in which George Augustus MILLER was a partner, would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks in advance, Nick Batley Sydney

    3. Hi Carol, My great grand uncle was in the Vic govt gazettes of the day as having an insolvent estate in 1877 in Castlemaine. His belongings were sold and any monies raised went to creditors. He subsequently died in 1918. So I think it quite feasible that your relative was just bankrupt at the time. 3. Hi Carol, First question - was it "solvent" as per your first email or "insolvent" as per your second email? This is a fairly important point as the two terms mean the direct opposite! Secondly you could perhaps include a name as others may be able to help with that. Generally a reference to an estate like this means the person is probably deceased. If it said Mr X, an insolvent, late of a town - that would mean that he used to reside in the town and had moved on - the inclusion of the word estate following solvent or insolvent indicates he's deceased. Hope that helps ........ 3. Well here is the marriage KELLY Pat married OCONNOR Annie Birth Place (him): VIC Year: 1901 Reg. Number: 3076. Looking it up by the ref number and year, she also was born in Vic. I would like to find her birth to find her parents, but there are too many. We can't assume she was given the name Annie, not Anne, Ann, or other variations. Given the short length of the marriage to Patrick Kelly it is very likely Annie married again and you will need to look for her death using her parents' names, rather than under Kelly. I have looked for a marriage but again there are too many to be sure of just in the Edwardian index, let alone the later Great War and marriage indexes! 3. Hi Bill Its Janet again, I just looked at the war documents and noted that Patrick's medals were to go to his mother a Mrs E Kelly at Campbell st Ararat so it looks like we are on the right track. His daughter Aileen had died from Influenza pneumonia in 1919 and his father died in May 1920 so this gives us a bit more to work with. It also stated there were no other living children. Also seen in one spot that his daughter is Aileen Alma Kelly. I will keep searching for you with this little bit more info.
