    3. Good morning to all, Is there anyone who can tell me if it is possible to obtain marriage notices out of a Bendigo Paper in the year 1901? are they kept at the Newspaper office or at the local Library, or even at the State Library? Would appreciate any info on the matter. Many thanks in advance Judy

    3. Hi If I may clarify quoting from the book "Maryborough .. A social history". Page 33 says "A new rush broke out at the Alma, or Joyce's diggings as it was originally called in December (1854).... Alfred Joyce referred to them as 'some new diggings taken up on my spring creek". But then on page 36 "Commissioner A J Smith requested a police camp at Joyce's Creek (Alma) in mid January" So maybe they are all the same place - Alma. As an aside, my great grandmother was born & grew up in Adelaide Lead and named one of her daughters, Alma. My understanding is that it was referred to as Joyce's DIGGINGS (being situated in a part of Alfred Joyces holding NORWOOD) but it is a long way from Joyces Creek as such. I am not saying you are wrong but just wondered where you got the reference. There is a book called "Old Gold and Mining Towns of Australia" by John Darbyshire (1975) which I have seen at my local library - maybe you might be able to source it from somewhere local to you. Sorry, Heather. I replied to Joan by email, so you wouldn't have seen it on the list. So for others who might be interested, here are the details again: Have you looked at the photos in the State Library's online collection? I know there are about 60-odd wonderful photos of Majorca between 1860-1900, and some of those probably cover Craigie as well. See: http://sinpic.slv.vic.gov.au/cgi-bin/Pwebrecon.cgi?DB=local&PAGE=First and enter a locality in the 'search' line. -- Regards John

    3. Hi Folks, Heather wrote, . I have visited the Melbourne PRO twice recently (a great place) and read odd school records- they have hoards of Bet Bet records, but where else are school records likely to be found, if they are still in existence, please? My reply: Local historical societies and libraries. For instance, the Avoca Society has good (probably duplicates of the PRO's ) records of attendance at the Mountain Hut School. The Carisbrook Historical Society has the Shelbourne West register, after it had been on my cousin's aunt's wardrobe for 35 years. (The Maldon Historical Society was offered it, but never came to collect it.) Some libraries have copies of early Inspectors' Reports, which list teachers' names and salaries, and other miscellaneous school info, and information collected during Back-To's. Of course, sometimes records, such as old photos, have survived at schools themselves. There are some privacy issues in relation to some of these. Tom

    3. Hello Listers, I am not new to lists as such, but new to this list. I am seeking links to this family and trying to 'give it up' for a while. Lieut.Francis Crossman Doveton was first Gold Commissioner sent to Ballarat and was at Mt Alexander at the time of Eureka. However, he was doing his job when asked to collect the licences, so was part of the problem. His wife was Margaret Bostock who died in 1853 and he remarried to Annie Snell with links to CONNELL.... Part of the story in pages as under... I have word documents for those with family links... For now Sincerely in Searching.... Thelma in Queensland..
