Jenny, I would be interested to know if there is a John Joseph (Jack?) CROWLEY listed on the CD. He was said to have been born circa 1888 in Cork, Ireland, and to have probably jumped ship around 1912, most likely in Victoria. Many thanks for your assistance! Hello Jenny, A great offer, but most of the enquiries were: Who produced it, what is its real title, what state/country does it cover (you have given the dates, thanks for that) Price & distributer it can be ordered from? Some of us represent groups who are building up their own research collection and this sounded intriguing. Hello Jenny, Could you please search for Edwin Sandford. We have no records of him prior to his marriage in Creswick in 1874 at the age of 27. He was an American and is supposed to have been working on whaling ships. My other "ship jumper" arrived in the early 1850's so won't be on the CD. With thanks, Jeannie. ----- Original Message ----- From: <JnnyB@aol.com> To: <AUS-VIC-GOLDFIELDS-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, August 06, 2005 11:18 PM Subject: CLIP CD > Hello listers, > > The much talked about CLIP CD (Crew lists) is in my hot little hands. Hello listers, From all the use I have given this CD over the day and from reading the intro and instructions, it appears that a persn may only appear on the CD if a ship he was aboard made a trip to England. There are plenty of German, Danish and Swedish seamen as well as English and a smattering of Aussie born fellows. While I wouldn't take a negative result as conclusive evidence that he didn't go to England on his travels, it may suggest that most of his travels were local. I know many listers are looking for the initial arrival of ancestors so I guess you should bear in mind that this CD can't hope (and does not claim)to cover all men who were on ships in English ports in a 50 year period. There are details about the extent of coverage in the information section. It's a great start. It's just a shame we have nothing like it for Australian ports. Jenny
O.K. Listers, Here are the publication details. I have been holding off putting up some of the info as I had hoped to copy the introduction but alas there is security on the file which prevents me copying ANY text. This means I can't copy a few lines and send them to people with multiple entries for an ancestor, or with ancestors with common names. While I endores the author's right to do this as they want to encourage purchase of the CD it certainly is frustrating. Produced by: S&N Genealogy Supplies 2002 and the CLIP project. S&N Genealogy supplies Tel/Fax 01722 716121 (English number?) www.GenealogySupplies.com Records "have been drawn from Crew Lists, Crew Agreements and Log Books for the period 1863-1913 held in local record office (ROs)in the British Isles and at the Public Record Office (PRO) Kew." The records include ID numbers which refer users to the original record held in English Record offices. The CD also refers to "Records of Merchant Shipping and Seamen", by Smith, Watts, and Watts, produced by PRO (England) (ISBN 1 873 162 49 9) for further details and info on other periods. Sorry folks but that's all that is on the CD. Don't be disheartened if you think it is all English born men. There are lots of Swedes and Australians. -- best wishes, Jenny
Hi Jenny! I would be grateful to be included on what I hope for you will be just a quick look-up! I am searching for Andrew Blomberg, a Swedish mariner, came to Melbourne via London 1862. Possible ship – HAZARD or ANN(E) MELHUISH. Married in Melbourne 1863. I believe he lived in Portarlington c. 1875 still working as a mariner or master mariner. He died in Melbourne 1879. I would be very interested and most grateful to get any further info if he is on the CLIP. Richard -- No virus found in this outgoing message. Checked by AVG Anti-Virus. Looking for Joyce YOUNG, formerly WADDELL, nee UNKNOWN, and her children Julie-ann (now married with issue) Phillip YOUNG (WADDELL once) and two others names not known. Joyce and her children once lived in Campbelltown, and St Peters, South Australia, moving to Victoria and then to QLD. It is so difficult to track them down with 2nd marriages etc. - and there are so many P. YOUNG's in the phone book! Just hoping that someone may know where they are. Hello. Thought that I would re-post the names I am researching: CUNNING HALLS SEWELL JAMIESON RYRIE In the 1850's onwards in Ballarat, Creswick. Trentham. There were CUNNING and RYRIE Gold mines near Creswick. I would like to hear from anyone researching these names, I have most BMD, dates and photos of tombstones.. Cheers, Bob
My GG grandfather John Woodruff SYPHERS ended his sea faring life when he "jumped ship" in Sydney town in the 1840s, but which ship and when were the questions to be answered. Then in 1857 John became naturalised! John W. Syphers' Naturalisation certificate of 11 September 1857, states he was a native of the USA, aged 34 years, arrived on the ship "Kelso" in 1848, being a resident of Tumut, NSW and wishing to enjoy the privileges of a British subject! So perhaps this is an alternative if your ancestor arrived before the CLIP CD. Check naturalisation 1834-1903 on the online index at: http://www.records.nsw.gov.au/accessforall/default.htm and their arrival ship should also be recorded. Another alternative is to check Police Warrants "Wanted" records for the period. John's Crew List records (obtained personally at PRO, Kew, London,) gave lots of information, including: " In conformity the Imperial Statute 7 & 8 Vict Capt112, I hereby certify that George Hisse, Richard John Coker, Richard Williams, John Woodroof Syphers and John Morgan have deserted from the ship "Kelso". David Roxburgh, Master, and that a warrant has been taken out for their apprehension. Water Police Office (Sd) H.H. Hello Everyone, Sorry I've taken so long to respond to this query. It was the first time in years that I haven't checked my emails daily! The CLIP CD stands for "Crew Lists something something"! It commences in 1863 but I'm not sure about an end date. It has a wealth of information about crew members including previous ships worked on, when & where engaged, sometimes age, place of birth and a host of other things. I know our local group (Narre Warren & District FHG) has it. Stay tuned while I check out further publication details and let the list know. -- best wishes, Jenny
"Jenny, could you please reply to the list" I'll second that Jenny, I too would like to know, if only to have any and all information on hand. I have a lot of people ask me to do lookups via my site, so if it's not too expensive I'd like to buy one too if it's available! :D "I'm beginning to think they swam!" I have a few of those Jeannie, although I think mine were actually abducted by aliens. No, wait, some were sent back, just not where they were SUPPOSED to be!! ;D Just quickly, since I'm posting to the list ... we're all heading to New Mexico to visit Walter's family for a few weeks, leaving next week on the 10th. I'm going to unsub from the list, probably on the weekend. If anyone wants any lookups done on any of the CDs I have, please let me know offlist by Tuesday and I'll get them done before we leave! :D Don't enjoy the peace TOO much, I WILL be back!! ;D Take care, Rob.
Jenny, could you please reply to the list as I'd be interested to know also. I have a couple of mariners who are supposed to have "jumped ship" in Melbourne and I haven't been able to track them down. I'm beginning to think they swam! Hi, Is anyone able to tell me the date of the ealiest burial in the Elphinstone Cemetery, please? Would it have been possible that my 3rd great grandmother, Mary FULLERTON, was buried on the family's property when she died there in 1858? The Elphinstone Cemetery Register does not include Mary FULLERTON. The FULLERTONs owned 17 acres on what is now Bubbs Lane, off the Calder, north of Elphinstone. The family retained the Title of this property until at least 1906, though they did not occupy it for much of that time. Sometime before 1906 it had been acquired by the Metcalfe Shire and leased to George BUBBS. Thanks, Aillin __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Tired of spam? Yahoo!
