Hi Folks, Joan wrote: <snip> could anyone tell me if the Primary School operating in Maryborough in the early 1900's is still in existence and where records for this school may be held. Me: There are two schools in Maryborough, 404, known as Maryborough (or the West School) to which my mother and brother went, and 2828 Maryborough East (or the East School) to which my father and I went. Both are still operating, so may have their records, but someone else will have to give you the definitive locations. I know that the genealogical group in Maryborough was collecting and naming old school photos. You've made me think of the poem about the East School which I learnt when I was there 50 years ago "In eighteen hundred and eighty six, they built in Maryborough a school of bricks. They put the windows so high in the wall, You had to stand on the desks to see out at all!" I don't remember the rest of it, but I suspect the windows were so high because when my Dad was there in the 1920's, the rooms with the high windows had galleries ( i.e. stepped classrooms). If you look in the List Archives, you may find postings on the schools you've asked about. Tom
Hello All Looking for information on the Alma School, particularly in the 1850's. Apparently State School No. 23 commenced in 1856 and was replaced in 1864 by No. 848. Any ideas as to where the old records may be? Also would there be any hope of photos? Also, could anyone tell me if the Primary School operating in Maryborough in the early 1900's is still in existence and where records for this school may be held. Any help would be much appreciated. Regards Joan

I agree with Richard, 32 Perches as an area would be 968 sq yards or 809.37 sq metres. (or if you were an ancient Roman 0.323748513792 Jugera) The free program "Calendar Magic" - google for it, will do all the conversions you ever need and some you don't. Also great for calendars of all types, distances and a million (well, at least a lot) of other things. Yes Richard there will be many on this list who grew up with learning the imperial measurements tables (but never really understood what they were about). I can guarantee it wasn't about housing for birds though :-) Beth -----Original Message----- From: RichardB [mailto:rblomra28@netspace.net.au] Sent: Wednesday, 10 August 2005 6:09 PM To: AUS-VIC-GOLDFIELDS-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Perch
Hi all I am looking for information about the Creswick Miners Association (1870 - c 1883) which later, following a number of amalgamations became the Australasian Coal and Shale Employees Federation. A relative John SAMPSON along with a Mr W G Spence were the leaders of the Union in it's original form. My ggggrandfather was SAMPSON so I am after any pertinent info or photos. There is some biog info on the trades union ass website for WG Spence but none for John Sampson. Regards Samantha Menzies Send instant messages to your online friends http://au.messenger.yahoo.com
Hi Julia! Re He had other land too, the description of which seems odd. "Crown allotment 3 of Section 1 of the parish of Clunes, containing 32 perches or thereabouts." Perches?? What would that be - feet, or yards ?? Hopefully it wasn't the number of bird houses.<vbg> You could do Google search under “area perch measurement length ” etc. I think you will find the “perch” ( or rod or pole) is actually an old Imperial length measurement equal to 5.5 yards or 16.5 feet. So land measures would likely to be a contraction of square perch being equal to an area of 1 perch x 1 perch or 30.25 sq yards. (Any civil engineers or surveyors out there?) Have a look at this site too…. Hello All - Sorry to sound so ignorant, but I'm trying to decipher a property record for a person who died intestate, and some of the terms are unfamiliar. He had land - with no listed value - "held by deceased under the 42nd Section of the Amending Land Act, being allotment 1 section ___ Parish of Conover, County of Kara Kara". - Would this mean he held the entire Allotment 1? The value of the fencing around same land was 150.0.0, which was taxed. - What did the 42nd Section of the Amending Land Act cover? (I did try a Google search - and got very, very wierd results.) - How much land could be held under that act? Was it 'free' land, which could be claimed, and if improved upon, became the claimants after a period of time? He had other land too, the description of which seems odd. "Crown allotment 3 of Section 1 of the parish of Clunes, containing 32 perches or thereabouts." Perches?? What would that be - feet, or yards ?? Hopefully it wasn't the number of bird houses.<vbg> Could people give property away before their death, thus avoiding death taxes? He was sick for 14 days, and a lot could have been done in that time. I'm trying to put together a realistic picture of what he might have had. Thanks for any help you can give me on this. Try Google for Tom Mitchell Corryong. He was a member of parliament. His wife Elayne died in 2002. She was the author of The Silver Brumby. Dear Jenny, If possible could you have a look for John Torpey, an Irish seaman, resident and working from early 1860s out of Melbourne. Thank you Betty Cheeseman
Hi Trish I searched at http://mariners.records.nsw.gov.au for HEDGES and came up with quite a few hits. The following is for M HEDGES, but there are heaps of HEDGE (would you believe a ROSE HEDGE......mmm I bet she smelt nice) and HEDGES and it's interesting that the same guys appear to be HEDGE on one list and HEDGES on another. WENTWORTH OF SYDNEY, B. PADDLE, MASTER, BURTHEN 650 TONS from THE PORT OF MELBOURNE TO SYDNEY, NEW SOUTH WALES, 9TH JULY 1875 HEDGES M. Passenger I hope it proves to be a clue..... Sherrie referred me to Aus Archives. Thank you Sherrie – Some time ago I got the digitized copy for Andrew Blomberg at the Aus Archives. I am looking now to cross reference and hopefully find some record of his experience (crew listing) in Melbourne waters while he was living at Portarlington. Hopefully something on CLIP. Hopefully Jenny will find something!
