    3. 27 July 2005 Hi All, Below is an extract I found in the Victorian Government Gazette 1863 which I thought may be of interest to some one. WILFUL MURDER. ONE HUNDRED POUNDS REWARD -FREE PARDON TO AN ACCOMPLICE. WHEREAS on Saturday, the 21st of February last, the body of one David Mullen also known as "Big Davy," was found in a water-hole near Ballaarat, after the lapse apparently of about thirty hours from the time of decease, with the head mutilated and otherwise injured : Notice is hereby given that a reward of One hundred pounds will be paid by the Government for such information as shall lead to the apprehension and conviction of the person or persons guilty of causing the death of the said David Mullen. The Governor will also extend Her Majesty's free pardon to any person implicated in the crime above mentioned, and not being the actual murderer of the deceased, who will give the required information. By His Excellency's Command, JOHN O'SHANASSY. Chief Secretary's Office, Melbourne, 18th March, 1863. 1615 Cheers Anne Hanson

    1. Grocers in Clunes
    2. Trevor
    3. I have come across the business of JONES & PETERS, Grocers, in Clunes. They were advertising in the Clunes 'Guardian' in the 1860s - 1870s. The PETERS name is of interest to me, and I know that one of the family was in Clunes at one time before moving on to settle in Ballarat. The idea of him being a grocer is of interest, if he is the man I suspect he might be. I think they might have been in partnership for some time because reference is also made to JONES & PETERS in the 'Talbot Leader' in April 1864, Does anyone know anything about this business and the people named? Or point me in the right direction to find out who this PETERS (of Jones and Peters) is? Trevor

    3. Mitchells at Delatite are major people - including a vineyard in the 1990s and perhaps longer. I've been to Delatitite, a lovely station. Worth remembering Elynne's writing both for her children's horse books and her outdoor works. The SCV and others for pre 1940s are of importance here I suspect. Tom was 'Country Party', essentially right wing rural conservative. 3. Today I have been looking at the Victorian Government Gazettes for 1861 and 1863. Rivetting stuff! So exciting it sets your hair on fire. NOT. However, my pursuit was the land acquisitions of a couple of Dunolly lads in 1861 so I persisted and struck gold, so to speak. I am left a little puzzled, however, and pose a few questions which, hopefully, listers will be able to help me with. 1. Why would land acquisitions appear in the Government Gazette? The notices appear under the heading, TITLE DEEDS. It seems odd that they would be gazetted. 2. In each case, the Title Deeds were "forwarded for delivery at the Receipt and Pay Offices undermentioned....". What was a "Receipt and Pay Office"? There seemed to be an awful lot of them - Maryborough, Amherst, Dunolly, Moliagul, Clunes, Avoca, Talbot, Majorca, Carisbrook, etc, etc 3. How would I go about finding a map of the actual land for which titles were applied and granted? The largest piece was 7a. 3r. 21p. and the smallest just over 1a. All were in Dunolly. Trevor

    3. Hi all, Reposting my interests. John WILLIAMS b. c. 1831 in Cape Town, South Africa (possibly Welsh origin) d. 6 May 1901 in Warragul (Timber splitter and farmer) m.
