One of my family is said (by family handme down info) to have emigrated from Cornwall to Daylesford VIC on a "KINGS GRANT". Has anyone got a clue as to what this might mean - or is it just family myth? Phil MUNNS Perth

Hello All, has anyone any idea where I can look (have searched births, deaths marriges) to find a marriage certificate between George Macauley Howard and Ann, annie, anna, Hannah Birnie, Berney. This marriage is reported to have taken place in March 1858 and on various birth certificates in Swan Hill, St. Arnaud, Alma and Avoca. Any assistance would be much appreciated. Also any clues as to how I find a death certificate for Ann, Annie etc Howard especially after 1900 without buying an excessive number of death certificates for Ann, annie, anna etc Howard. At the Llanberris N0.1, George Ling received a badly crushed foot by a fall of rock. That is all that is reported in that report. "If I was to post my spares to the List, what minimum/maximum information would Listers need...?" I'm not sure how much you "should" post, but as a rule I put the year, the place the certificate is from, the name of the individuals on the certificate, and if possible the exact date. Usually that's sufficient and if anyone thinks they have a connection, they can email you for more details and/or a copy! :D Take care, Rob.
"Is there a website that collects names that r on BDM certificates." Hi Janis :) I would also love to hear of any site like this, because I usually just post them here!! lol There are sites for English certificates, but I've never heard of an Aussie site. Hmmmmmmmm ... maybe I should look at doing that on my own site!! ;D Anyway, if anyone answers Janis' question, could you please post to the list? Thanks! :D Take care, Rob.
Hi, I am trying to find info on Ajax Mine in particular a miner Samuel Penglase Hender who was killed 4th January, 1917 at the Ajax Mine, North Nuggety, Talbot. His death was the reult of misadventure and rocks. He is buried in the Daylesford Cemetery. Cheer Polly

Hi Valmae I have a list of those buried in the Old Ballan Cemetery. It was put together by the Ballan Historical Society. The list was published in one of ther newsletters and I was lucky enough to get a copy of it when I was investigating my Lyons, Dwyer and Shanahan family in the area. Now to your query It simply lists that a Jhn Smith age 51 died or was buried 31st August 1868 and that he lived near Ballan. William Smith age 5 months died 31st May 1859 Emly Park. I would doubt that a plan could be done unless it was found from the original days. There are some remainng tombs and head stones but the last time I visited it was rather bare having been cleared and flattened. The other Smiths listed include Elizabeth 18 18th Aug 1862, Ballan, Francis 53 15th May 1875, Ingliston, Henry Curtis 2 1/2 years 4th May 1861 Dr's Creek nr Ballan, Hannah 65 yrs 16th Feb 1873 Ballan, Mary Ann 5 yrs 5th Dec 1862 Nr Ingliston, William 37 years 12th May 1874 Ballarat Rd nr Ballan. Now I have to admit that in was around 1996 when I was given this news letter by June Huggins C/- Post Office Gordon. This list was compiled by D Wickham and J Huggins from the registers of the Government statist in Melbourne. Transcriptions from the Monuments in the cemetery, death notices, obituaries, inquests etc in the Bacchus Marsh Express and the Ballan Times, the Walsh Papers and various family histories. I hope this is helpful. Thanks to all those who helped me with the definition of a "hutkeepers wife". It certainly seems to have put me on the right 'track'. -- Best regards, Julie from Cairns mailto:tropikkal@mytown.net.au
I am trying to match up an old map found at http://www.nla.gov.au/apps/cdview?pi=nla.map-nk2456-303-sd with a current location at the junction of Bullock Creek and Fletchers Creek. The map shows the Village of Marong, Bullock Creek in 1855. My interest is in the paddock and yards shown on the map. My g/g/mother, Ellen MAGINNIS d. Fletchers Creek 1861. Her husband was a hutkeeper. She was buried at Bullock Creek Cemetery. I am not sure how many sheep/cattle paddocks there were in the area, but this seems a possibility. Could someone please direct me to a map that shows the exact spot where the paddock and yards were? Also, is there much left of the Bullock Creek Cemetery? Headstones? Other family members were also born, died and buried in the same area. HAYBURN/HEYBURN and McGINNIS/MAGINNIS (and similar) -- Best regards, Julie from Cairns mailto:tropikkal@mytown.net.au
Judy If you were to purchase one of the children's bth certificates or the marriage cert of this couple it will list his occupation. The marriage cert would be better in telling a little about her as well. A death certificate may also give you his past occupation although sometimes they are listed as gentleman (retired) so not quite as reliable. Labourer is one I hate too because it is such a wide profession.
