Hello. I am researching John CUNNING and James Erskine CUNNING and the CUNNING and RYRIE goldmines in the CRESWICK area 1860 to 1880. Also Robert JAMIESON and Alexander RYRIE and families in the same area. Is anyone else researching these names?. Cheers, Bob in Melbourne
All have brickwalls, don't we? My Gr.Gr.g,father John Eddy vanished after 1850 when he gave info on death of a son, shortly after arriving in 1849. The rest of the family moved to Vic.Goldfields 1851-52? Now wondering if he spat the dummy and returned to G.B. and if so, are there any shipping lists for return trips. Have found all the wonderfull info re shipping into S.A. during the 1800's. Wonderfull stuff? Any help very welcome. Seems he only had one name, and John Eddy? hundreds in StJust. Very difficult. Try http://members.iinet.net.au/~perthdps/shipping/mig-sa1.htm http://www.jaunay.com/ships.html There is a wonderful card index at the SA State library re newspaper lists of passengers. I would join the SA rootsweb list & post a query. SA was an important entry point for people who later went on to the Vic Goldfields Judy Qld >Is there a web site for shipping into Port Adelaide. >I'm looking for Samuel & Mary Jane Collins & their son John, arriving in >Adelaide from England 1852 on the "Gloucester" (I was told third hand). _________________________________________________________________ REALESTATE: biggest buy/rent/share listings http://ninemsn.realestate.com.au
Hi everyone, Does anyone remember the VicGold database that used to be on-line through KE Software? It was around 1997/98. Does someone have VicGold on CD? I'm researching a George BROOKER (c.1826 Cambridge, Eng), who sailed to Victoria, Aust. between 1851 & 1856, when he married Christina McDONALD in 1856. (I have the family in Victoria) I would like to know what information VicGold had - this is the reference I found off the Cambridge Family History website.. Victoria Gold Fields Surname References - Search Results Surname Forenames Date of Birth Vic Gold Ref BROOKER George 1825 B22393 'The names extracted here are of Cambridgeshire emigrants to Victoria, Australia during the gold rush. These are indexed references to the VicGold database. Although the database has been withdrawn and sadly it does not seem to have reappeared, these references may be of use. The Australian Vital Records holds the New South Wales, Victoria, Western Australia and Tasmania information up to about 1888 and could be used for reference. ' 'The National Heritage Foundation’s VicGold database contains information about 638,000 individuals and 98, 000 families and covers Victoria's gold rush era . This information was extracted from birth, death and marriage certificates and early church records. The creation of the database was funded by Multi Media Victoria.' I've googled and some websites have implied that the Vic BDM database was built from the VicGold database. However, as far as I can see the Vic BDM's is purely BDM's. Unless they're referring to the Marine Index? *************************** Kind regards, Sherrie. Sydney, NSW.

There is a maritime museum at Port Adelaide: and very interesting, too. As I recall, there was an interactive index of immigrants and ships, including photo's of ships, where avalable. I am not aware if this information is available by any other media. I have seen indices on microfyche - separate for males & females - of prisoners received into prisons in Victoria. As I recall, the list gave details, including dates. The males went upto about 1900; the females much later. Once you get dates, then try newspapers, especially local papers. Don't forget, one arrest may result in several articles, spread over months: just like a newsworthy crime today. I haven't forgotten those members who have asked for a copy of my CARWARDINE information. The thing is, I have unearthed a lot more information in England and am entering it into my program. I also have a few leads to follow up (thanks Jenny!) in the SLV. The good thing is that I think I have discovered when the family first engaged in soap and candlemaking or, at least, when it is first mentioned in the records.... looks like about 1780 in the Bristol area. Since the CARWARDINES were making soap in Wangaratta and elsewhere well into the 1930-40s, as were their PETERS cousins in Dunolly, that is not a bad length of time to be engaged in the one trade. Interesting stuff. Haven't forgotten you.. just need more time to get the additional material sorted out. Trevor
I see in the current issue of "Ancestor" that there is a to be a 'Family and Local History Discovery Day' at the Maryborough Resource Centre, this coming Sunday (18th), 10am - 4pm. Does anyone know what form this will take? That is, is it a Day for locals wanting to learn how to discover their family history, or is it likely to be of interest to a wider audience? I was thinking about making the trip up for the day. However, because I am fairly advanced in the "how to" of family history, I don't want to travel the distance if it is a "beginners" Day. I guess I am a bit selfish but I am getting on a bit and would rather conserve my resources and energies .... :-( On the other hand, since I have a lot of material on some local Maryborough-Tarnagulla-Dunolly-Logan families, I would be interested in the Day if there were some more 'advanced' aspects to the Day. Anyone know anything about it? Trevor
