    3. I have answered Dave off list. I really appreciate this. :) Lyn I'm just sorry that I didn't think to appeal to the list when another Uncle, Albert Govan died in Ballarat a few months back. I did approach the Courier directly then, via email and wasn't even graced with a reply. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Dave Evans" <devans@ncable.net.au> To: <AUS-VIC-GOLDFIELDS-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, November 07, 2005 1:35 PM Subject: Re: Death notices in this week's Ballarat Courier > Hi Lyn, > I get the Ballarat Courier everyday, please tell me the name to watch for. > > Dave in ballarat > At 11:50 AM 7/11/2005, Lyn Wilkinson wrote: >>Hi, >> >>Hoping someone can help me. 1. OCCUPATION - cordwainer
    2. Peter Thomas
    3. A cordwainer is a shoemaker. This is distinguished from the cobbler, who is a more humble repairer of shoes. My ancestor, William RICE (1780-1853; migrated to Tasmania 1821) was described as a cordwainer or shoemaker throughout his life, but shoemaker was more predominant toward the end of his l;ife. I've read that it was illegal for cobblers to use new leather to effect repairs: they had to recycle old leather. There is a Cordwainers' Society in Barnsley, Yorkshire, that is nearly 300 years old. 3. hi all, i aquired/saved a box of photos from an auction in ballarat about 2 years ago. There are a variety of names on the photos and they are obviously a long time collection ranging from about 1850 to 1950. some have names on them. One connection is Freda baggaley from Forest street bendigo. There are a range of other names. There was another box of photos at the time but they were too expensive to rescue. there are a range of studio portraits and box brownie family trips etc. I can submitt a list of names including the odd pet if it would be useful regards helen mcknight
