Crikey ! It was so long ago. I got the information through using Freedom of Information papers but I can't rmember how I got them ! Perhaps check the Post Office or the government section of the phone book for your area. I think that when wanting information about war records from the War Memorial in Canberra the papers were faxed to me. Perhaps the first step would be to write to the mental health authority in Ararat and ask how to go about it> I'm sorry the grey cells are fewer than before... Oh by the way: a few years ago the gaol was open to the public and it was quite sad to see the conditons under which so many people had had to be restrained.Someone in Ararat will be able to tell us if it is still open to the public. Hi Narelle, I'm also working on the SHORE surname. My 2 x gt grandmother was Elizabeth SHORE, (b 1848 at Lexington/Mt William), who married Thomas HAWKINS in Corop in 1877. Elizabeth's parents were: Richard Shore & Mary Welsh, according to her baptism certificate. Elizabeth's siblings were: Lucy, William, Mary, Robert, Jane - and perhaps John. As far as I'm aware, they married into the following families: Braine / Price / Weeks / O'Mullon. Let me know if this links up at all. Rgds, RAELENE - Melbourne Hello All, I am interested in BLADIN and SHORE surnames anywhere they might appear. regards Narelle
At one point it was gaol for the criminally insane. I managed to get informtion ( not she hastens to add for one of those poor thngs) through Freedom of Information. Hi Evanie My great grandfather was admitted to Ararat Asylum several times, for alcoholism - it seems he couldn't resist tasting his wares (he was the publican of the hotel at Raglan, Vic)...! Marg, I commiserate with you - I'm also still waiting for someone to find a box of my family photos. I don't have a Jones in my English ancestors, but I do have a Smith and a Haynes. I also have an Irish Twomey with the vague address of Cork. As you say, we must keep hoping, and we do have great Mailing Lists to keep us going. Good luck Joan

Hi Listers, Does anybody know whether Ararat Asylum was strictly for "Lunatics" or if it was also a "Benevolent Asylum" and if so, who might be admitted there? Hi List, Just wonderng if there is anyone out there researching John BLEWETT & Grace DUNSTAN of Happy Valley/Linton? Children Edward BLEWETT b abt 1855 married Eliza MILLIGAN Thomas BLEWETT b. 1865 Bessie BLEWETT b. abt 1868, married Wm Ernest SMITH Mary Jane Dunstan BLEWETT b. 1869 married Fredk Wm DAVIS John BLEWETT b. 1872, died 1872 Edith Grace BLEWETT b. 1873, married William Arthur FITRIDGE, then ?TALBOT Ronda Shambrook Leongatha
Could I respectfully suggest that when someone posts their research interests, that they type each SURNAME in capital letters? This is standard practice in on-line genealogy, and for a good reason. People are much more likely to spot a connection when the surname is capitalised and your chances of a reply are thus increased. Trevor

Hang in there Marg - the Phillips clan (England/Welsh/Scottish??) coupled with Commerford (Irish) will give you a run for your money - both are almost as common as Smith Jones McMahon etc and Dollars to Donuts I know exactly how you feel! My lot settled in Bendigo, Ballarat, Geelong and almost all the major spots throughout the Western District as did halve the rest of the unrelated lot!! I keep thinking I've hit pay dirt only to find they belong to an unrelated tree! Marion Button was a wonderful genealogist who resided in the Gisborne /Macedon area in Victoria. She was instrumental in starting many of us off on the genealogical trail. She did many early indexes in the 1990's and published them in fiche form. Sadly she died of cancer a few years ago now. The Gisborne Genealogical Society would be the people to contact for a list of her indexes and from memory they have many of the indexes. They house their holdings at the Gisborne Library.
