This Index is very handy Roz. Now, can anyone tell me if there are similar lists for other counties? I'm looking for KILKENNY and QUEEN'S COUNTY. I've tried Rootsweb "Search Thingy" and there are thousands of hits when I search on KILKENNY alone. Thanks Teresa

    3. Hi Margaret > > I notice you just mentioned ordering records from them. Is this possible and > how would I go about it? I am also at the bottom of the class when it comes > to navigating the PRO website. You can order ahead for them to be sent to the Reading Room so that they can be ready for you when you go down IN PERSON. From www.prov.vic.gov.au: "...You can use this site to learn about what records we hold, and how we provide access to them. You can search for and order particular records through Access the Collection. To view original records you will need to visit one of our reading rooms...." and "...Most activities can be done without having to register but if you want to order records you will be prompted to do so. Existing users can log in at any time..." Click on the "Access the Collection" link. a.. Register as a public user b.. then search online for the records (series etc) you want c.. then order them to be sent to the reading room d.. then you go down in person to look at them! I persisted last night and finally getting a better understand myself now. So, this is why it''s difficult for people who can't get to PROV in person! But, there's hope, did you see what Penelope said? "...Try contacting the Genealogical Society in Melbourne. I think they have researchers who will look the info up at the PRO for a nominal fee. They will get a photo copy of the records..." Regards Teresa

    3. Hello Carmel, I am in Sydney and am unable to get to the PRO. I have phoned them twice as I'm trying to get records for a Jane Bruton who died in the Kew Lunatic Asylum in 1878. Both times I was told very curtly that I had to come to the PRO to get them. I notice you just mentioned ordering records from them. Is this possible and how would I go about it? I am also at the bottom of the class when it comes to navigating the PRO website. 3. Hi Carmel Thanks for that, now I'm getting closer. That's the specific information that I wanted, whether I can get more than their admission listing! Thank you! I guessed that I would have to personally visit the archives, so I was just now in the middle of searching for my login details to get ready to order ahead. I was also preparing to email them because, despite doing several 'meta searches' on their site, I still can't find what I'm looking for. 3. Theresa I had an ancestor die at the Yarra bend mental asylum in 1912. A visit to the PROV many years ago gave me access to her records which were very interesting. I am yet to go back to finish what I started. The website only has the listing but take down all details, dates and any numbers that may be associated with the list then you may need to book the records and make the trip there for further details. As far as records go for FOI if they are not going to affect anyone now I think they then become public records. It is only the records of people still alive that would be locked up. It may be worth sending PROV an email asking them. 3. Hi Anne, Carmel, Susan and Evanie, Thanks all very much for your replies about Ararat Asylum. I have already accessed the Asylum's Admission Records from PROV online, where I've discovered my ggrandfather's listings. It's his Medical Records that I'd like to try and get. A Lister told me ages ago that Medical Records are kept 'forever' under FOI. So, I've looked at the government's FOI site and haven't found anything yet. You usually obtain medical records from the original place where you received the medical treatment. That's why I suspect I won't find anything about them on the government's FOI site. Also, because these records are so old and the asylum isn't running any more, they would probably and hopefully be deposited at PROV in the archives. Which leads me to the problem I have with the PROV website, that is I find it really difficult to navigate around it...! I'll persist and figure it out one day, provided they don't change it around again... It was also suggested that a visit to J Ward is an enlightening experience and I do hope to visit it one day. I did a field trip 'down memory lane' earlier this year (to Raglan, Beaufort, Skipton, Ballarat, Snake Valley etc) and could have squeezed in a visit to Ararat, but I spent all of my weekend traipsing around the cemeteries, looking for headstones and taking photos and was exhausted by Sunday lunch time! Thanks again - this is a fantastic list as usual.
