Would anyone please have the volumes for Deaths at the Alfred Hospital and The Melbourne Benevolent Asylum compiled by Terry Foenander? I have found refereence to death at Alfred for JAMES RAY book 1, page 32 Melbourne Hospital Index JOHN REA vOLUME 3, PAGE 34. I have my fingers crossed. Thanks Margaret
Hi to everyone In 2003 I was trying to find out about Hugh Louis Zephyr DOWNEY, my great grandfather. Lots of help came from people on the list but eventually the brick wall rose and I moved to research on other lines. About two months ago my sister suggested I put a request on the Desperately Seeking page of the Melbourne Herald Sun Sunday paper. It worked. Just a fortnight ago I received an email from a descendent in Melbourne who had been trying to find the NZ family. We have been in contact and I now have found an enormous Australian family. I thought this advice might help others break down their brick walls too.

When I was working on the Supreme Court Equity Case Files, Because I had to sort a dreadful mess of mixed up and broken files, I sought the Supreme Court indexes available and compared what I found in the files with the few surviving indexes which had a partial coverage of the cases. I found, from a so-called complete file for one part of the files, the so-called "Miscellaneous Files", many discrepancies. In comparing the first 4,000 files in that series: 340+ files not included in the original index 47 completely mis-transcribed surname titles (not even lateral thinking would have helped here) 30 indexed under the wrong file number (number ommissions and duplicate numbers) and other minor difficulties. These were found by a physical examination of each file, cross-referencing case numbers, surnames, dates, etc from my listing with the official listing. INQUESTS: The same has been found by the lass who did the original combined departmental inquest index which has been available on microfiche. Last year she was doing for the inquest files what I had been doing for ten years with the 12,000 Equity case files. I sat next to her on many occasions, and she was working through the mis-transcribed names, the files ommitted from the original departmental indexes, the "cause of death" ommitted from the original indexes, etc. I believe, when she has finished (a BIG job) the index will be re-issued and brought up to date. An enquiry to MacBeth's Genealogical publishers might be able to suggest a date for this, though Marge had been working on it once a week for a full day in 2004, I have not been at my usual place at the VPRO in 2005, and my own work has been "on hold". Hence I have lost touch with progress. regards, Ada Ackerly, Melbourne, Australia formerly Ackerly DocuSearch -- No virus found in this outgoing message. Checked by AVG Anti-Virus. Does anyone have the WHITE HILLS CEMETERY MEMORIALS microfiche who could do a lookup for me? The BCT database search comes up with nothing. I have a DC for John McGINNIS d. 16 March 1889 aged 60 yrs in Sandhurst Hopsital who was buried in White Hills Cemetery. His DC gives no other details to help me identify him. Of course, if he had no kin he may not have been given a headstone. Are there any other records for White Hills that could help me? -- Best regards, Julie in Cairns Interests - John McGINNIS or HAYBURN John WILLIAMS Christopher and Eliza BURKE all mainly Marong/Eaglehawk area 1852 - 1890's mailto:tropikkal@mytown.net.au

Do you realise you can look up the NSW indexes on line at http://www.bdm.nsw.gov.au/familyHistory/search.htm? (deaths to 1974). Your man is there, although it doesn't mention whether there was an inquest, but then you can order a certificate for $24 or get a transcription (cheaper) through one of the agents. To add to the inquest discussion, I have a death cert for a g g grandfather who died at Axedale 1884. The cert states there was an inquest into his death. This inquest also does not appear on my Vic inquest cd. It appears the index has many missing entries. Janine
Yes I do realise this but was hoping to get his age, so that I don't get another dud. Thanks anyway for replying Janis

I have been following the sulky accident drama with some interest because I have a similar fatality and would love to find out if there were an inquest, and how I go about finding its outcome. Robert Sargeant Peters, who was in Tarnagulla and district from 1855, and who married Mary Jane Falder, daughter of the well-known Jonathon Falder, eventually took up land in South Gippsland when it was being opened up. He was killed when his buggy hit a tree stump on the night of 10th June 1896, in the vicinity of Bass, Vic. How do I find an inquest, if one were held? I would be grateful for any guidance. Trevor PS: The following news clipping is among family papers: KILLED INSTANTLY BY A CAPSIZE Grantville, Wednesday While returning from San Remo last evening, after giving evidence before the Railways Com- mittee in reference to the proposed Bass Valley line, Mr R,S, Peters, while driving with Mr P. Baker, home through Mr Anderson's pad- dock, met with a fatal accident. The buggy capsized over a stump, killing Mr Peters, whose neck was broken in the fall, instantly. Mr Baker escaped with a slight injury to his back. The deceased had been a resident of Bass for 18 years, and was much respected. - Publication and date, not known.
