    1. HORANS of Golden Square
    2. Tony O'Grady
    3. Does anyone on the list have an interest in , or information about, the HORANS at Golden Square? The main related families were HOGAN, MACKINS and MERIGAN. They arrived in the 1850s. Joseph Michael and his wife Bridget became the licensees of the Hibernian Hotel soon after their arrival. He later became a carter and they both lived in Panton St until the late 1880s. Joseph's sister Catherine HOGAN was a widow who arrived with her sons Patrick, Thomas, Kieran and Rody HOGAN about the same time. Another widowed sister, Honora MACKINS and her five children also came to Golden Square in the 1850s In addition to these there was a neice, Honora MERIGAN, She and her husband, Andrew MERIGAN, at one stage were the licencees of the Golden Square Hotel in High St., Golden Square. 3. Good evening Today we were given a lead on John Loru Cawble Macfarlane, who has been a trifle elusive to say the least. The clue is that he was brought out from Scotland with others, because of his mining skills, and was in some way connected to Ballarat. He had teaching skills of some sort. The story is that one of his grandsons many years ago went to Ballarat to veiw a plarque bearing his name in recognition of something he achieved, possibly in the teaching field. We would be really pleased if there were some leads in this direction, the plarque may still be around. Regards Graham Brittain

    3. Kevin, you almost caused me to have severe heart palpitations when I read Whitfield. I thought don't tell me some one is finally looking for Whitfield's. Unfortunately your Whitfields are different from mine. My lot where at Creswick and Mitiamo and came from Allendale Northumberland. Good luck with your search. Dianne Hughes Teesdale Victoria

    3. Trevor Thankyou for this reference. Charles Dicker is the brother of my G G grandfather, Francis Manly Dicker. 3. Julie, I live a few blocks from the convent you mention. I could take a digital photo of it if you wish and email it to you. It is a very, very large building and it would be difficult to get a full view in just one picture. The Little Sisters of the Poor still run an old peoples' home in the grounds, within a much smaller modern building. The remainder of the old convent buildings are now owned and run by the Greek Orthodox Church. The sisters who live on site are now very elderly and might not be up to searching out the records and replying. I make an annual donation to their work, and can vouch that sometimes they even have trouble with managing receipt writing! 3. About 3 months ago, I went in to the State Library to see an exhibition (nearly finished) entitled, "The Changing Face of Victoria". This is on Level 5 of the reading room, under the magnificently restored dome which is worth a trip in to the city for its own sake. (Accessible by lift.) Because of my special interests, I was delighted to see some photographs (ambrotype) on display, taken in 1860/61 of Dunolly and Burnt Creek (Bromley) by Charles Dicker. I enquired at the reference desk re cost of copies. $35 for black and white and $85 for colour reproductions were the figures I was given. I won't be ordering any. Well, I might consider just one! The good news, for those who cannot get into the exhibition, is that you can see the pictures on line. Not as clear as the real thing, but good nevertheless. If you go to the State Library of Victoria's catalogue at http://www.slv.vic.gov.au then click on "Catalogues and Databases" and then click on "Pictures Catalogue" you will be led to a search window. Enter the search term Dicker and you will come to the above mentioned collection, plus a few others of his photographs in the SLV. Click on each thumbnail for a better view of each picture. It is worth reading the full bibliographic description too. To do this, click on "View record for this item". I think they are worth a look because of they portray the town at the time when the municipality was gazetted and land sales of town blocks were under way. Recommended for all with an interest in Dunolly. Trevor

    3. Mary arrived on the" Sorata "1885 with her brother Michael. The family in Ireland said she went to join a convent, they thought "The Little Sisters of ther Poor" but I have written to them and they said no record of her. Does anyone please have suggestions where I may be able to find which order she joined, so that I may find her death and burial place. Thanks Margaret

    3. John the site I sent on is for all cemeteries in Australia. You find the one you want and then takes you to the appropriate site which would have been the one you suggested. if you are looking for a cemetery you may not know an address for you and may not be so easy to find on google but if you go through this cemetery site it has them all. All comes to the same conclusion.
