    1. Axedale - McGrath, O'Grady, McNamara, Doherty
    2. Tony O'Grady
    3. Does anyone have any information on the following families who settled in Axedale in the 1850s and 1860s? Between them they owned a combined area of over 1000 acres fairly close to the Longlea railway station. Pat McGRATH and his wife, Catherine Normoyle, bought their first block in 1864. His sister Bridget McGrath, and her husband, Michael O'GRADY also bought their first block in the same year. Another sister, Susan McGrath and her husband, William DOHERTY (DOORTY) bought neighbouring properties. Yet another sister, Jane McGrath, and her husband, John McNAMARA , had previously bought a block in 1856 and eventually had about 230 acres. There were also Denis McNAMARA, James O'LOUGHLIN and Daniel O'DEA who may also been related. Tony O'Grady Melbourne

    1. MARY CATHERINE NEYLAN
    2. margaret trewick
    3. Thanks to all who replied about Neylan. Yes the 2 men were mine, and the KINNANE seems a very definite possibility to be a missing Elizabeth who the Irish side of the family told me had probably remained in Ireland but no clues from then. Now it seems( since I can't find a marriage here) that she may have arrived here married. Probably arrived as Elizabeth Kinnane.Maybe on the Sorata with her 2 brothers? Still looking for Mary Catherine. You are all wonderful and I appreciate the help. Margaret

    3. Hi Mavis I put the Family Tree Maker program CD in the post late Thursday so you should get it soon. It is easy to load and use. I don't bother with sending info to Mormon files any more as it is basically all USA stuff shown. No need to return the CD. A reminder of a great resource was on my Goldfields list yesterday. If you go to the State Library of Victoria's catalogue at http://www.slv.vic.gov.au then click on "Catalogues and Databases" and then click on "Pictures Catalogue" you will be led to a search window. Enter the search term for a town, occupation or name and you will come up with same great early photos which can be used to "flesh out" family if you decide to write up a family history and share with others. Click on each thumbnail for a better view of each picture. It is worth reading the full bibliographic description too. To do this, click on "View record for this item". I'm absolutely flat out and doubt that I'll have time to catch up between now and end of school year. Let's have lunch in January after my Dad has gone back home! However their was a Melbourne International Exhibition, The British Court the picture dated Feb 12 1881. 2. The "British court" referred to is an area set aside for the display of British exhibits at the Sydney International Exhibition 1879-80, so not a Mining Exchange (and not in Ballarat) Jane Quoting Susan <susana@ncable.net.au>: > Thanks to Trevor's lead I had a play with the name Richards (an early > > Ballarat photographer). 3. THanks Trevor, good lead. While trawling through the pictures on site I looked up Thomas Foster Chuck a leading photographer in Daylesford, Ballarat, and Melbourne and there is one picture there of the leading lights in mining in Ballarat, all named, though hard to read. Thought I would pass this on. Regards Les -----Original Message----- From: trevor [mailto:tjwilliams@iinet.net.au] Sent: Saturday, 26 November 2005 2:14 PM To: AUS-VIC-GOLDFIELDS-L@rootsweb.com Subject: 1860 Photographs of Dunolly About 3 months ago, I went in to the State Library to see an exhibition (nearly finished) entitled, "The Changing Face of Victoria". This is on Level 5 of the reading room, under the magnificently restored dome which is worth a trip in to the city for its own sake. (Accessible by lift.) Because of my special interests, I was delighted to see some photographs (ambrotype) on display, taken in 1860/61 of Dunolly and Burnt Creek (Bromley) by Charles Dicker. I enquired at the reference desk re cost of copies. $35 for black and white and $85 for colour reproductions were the figures I was given. I won't be ordering any. Well, I might consider just one! The good news, for those who cannot get into the exhibition, is that you can see the pictures on line. Not as clear as the real thing, but good nevertheless. If you go to the State Library of Victoria's catalogue at http://www.slv.vic.gov.au then click on "Catalogues and Databases" and then click on "Pictures Catalogue" you will be led to a search window. It is worth reading the full bibliographic description too. To do this, click on "View record for this item". I think they are worth a look because of they portray the town at the time when the municipality was gazetted and land sales of town blocks were under way.
