Hello Rob Having a look at your photo - firstly, I think it says AGE 46 not ACE 46 - a check on the death indexes should confirm how old he was when he died - someone on the list may be able to help there. Secondly, whilst not an expert in these matters - I have seen similar headstones for other ex-servicemen - suggesting that it was perhaps a "standard" headstone, possibly provided by their military unit (or perhaps a historical group connected to that unit?), and was usually erected some time after their death?? The headstone and inscription looks in good condition, suggesting it may have been erected in more recent times? Presumably the military unit would only have been interested in recognising the ex-serviceman, and not anyone else in the grave, which explains why his wife was not listed. I recently visited the grave of a great uncle at Boroodara Cemetery in Kew, and was surprised to find a military plaque recognising him as a WWI serviceman - the cemetery has no idea who erected it, but it certainly wasn't direct family members - and like yours - the plaque contained an AIF logo and listed his military unit details, and did not refer to anyone else that was buried in the same grave. Hope this helps Susan

    3. Hi Robyn, He was Age 46 (not Ace 4.6), BDM records confirm this (below). Maybe his headstone was paid for by the army? You could write to the cemetary trust and ask who arranged the headstone. 3. Hi Rob, I think the reason that the wife was probably not on the head stone is that it looks like the kind of headstone provided by and paid for by the military. They did this for returned soldiers, but not for their wives. Given that it was around the start of the depression, it maybe that the family did not have the money to put up a headstone for her, but that they were able to get the military to put up one for him. The military will not include otheres burried in the same grave on the headstones. Penelope

    3. Sorry Ian, but I don't think there is a connection. My Eliza HALL was born ( about 1848)) at Belfast, Vic (now Port Fairy) and died in 1933. I know nothing of her antecedents at all (in the absence of certificates) except that I do know she was married to Walter Thomas PETERS, 21 March 1871, in Tarnagulla, Vic. It was her surviving children (PETERS) who moved to WA. I am not aware of her HALL family other than this. Wish I could have been of more help. 3. "Try searching http://www.naa.gov.au/." Hi Trevor :) Thanks VERY much for the suggestion above, I did just that after receiving an email from Lyn saying his records WERE available. I couldn't find him on my first run through, but I DID find one of my STRAUGHAIR ancestors, and my Uncle Richie, so I think now I've found John Thomas I'm going to have to put them all in my "wish list" and order copies next year. I'd love to do it now, but I've just forked out AU$3,000 for my 15yo son Casey to fly over for Christmas (he's actually somewhere between Sydney and Tokyo right now, WOOHOO!! :D oooops! sorry, that's not on topic, I'm just super excited! lol) so once he heads back to Oz late January I'll look into this further. One question for ALL of you about the NAA site ... is there any way to find out how many pages are in these records BEFORE ordering them? It's going to cost me about AU$28 per person for photocopies, but I noticed on the prices page that it's only about 20 cents per page on smallish sized records. I'm just wondering if perhaps it might be more financially viable to just get "basic info" copied and order the full records for people like Uncle Richie who I grew up with and would love to read about, or direct ancestors. Anyone know if that's possible please? While I'm emailing you all again, I'm going to take this opportunity to slip in an off topic note! ;D I hope you all have a wonderful Christmas and a very happy, safe and healthy 2006, and may all your brick walls come tumbling down in the new year!!!! :D You've all been a wonderful help to me while I've been a member of this list so a HUGE thank you to you all again! :D If any of you are doing any research over the Christmas season and you happen to notice any ARMSTRONG, BYNON or STRAUGHAIR names, I'd love to hear about it! :D Take care, Rob.

Yep, definitely time to stop putting off my laser surgery for retinopathy and get these eyes back to how they SHOULD be!! lol Thanks everyone for confirming what it should be, and next time I'll zoom in on the photo so I can see better, or better still go see the Prof. at Katherinen Krankenhaus and get these aging eyes seen to!! lol Take care, Rob. 3. Dear listers, I have received many enquiries on the above book, since it went out of print in 1991. For the last three years, I was only able to say: it is being rewritten and extended. A new researcher was engaged by the Trustees of the Altona Memorial Park (Helen DOYLE) to upgrade a second edition , and to extend the list of those buried in the Williamstown , Victoria, cemetery to 1858- 2004. Chapters 1 to 5, written by Andrew Lemon and Marjorie Morgan "remain substantially unchanged with the exception of Chapter 5, which have been extended. The two new chapters (6 & 7) were written by Helen Doyle." So, this is to let you know, that it has at last been released. regards, Ada Ackerly, Melbourne, Australia formerly Ackerly DocuSearch -- No virus found in this outgoing message. Several listers have suggested that because two of her children were dead, and the others were in W.A. that maybe she is in the same grave as her husband and there was no one around to bother about adding her name to the headstone. I suppose that is a real possibility. Thank you for checking Sue. Trevor

    3. "maybe she is in the same grave as her husband and there was no one around to bother about adding her name to the headstone." Hi Trevor :) I have this exact situation with one of my own ancestors, buried at Fawkner. John Thomas BYNON is buried on his own, or so you would think from his headstone. On his headstone it reads 504 2/Corporal J.T. Bynon 2 Tunnelling Company, 21st February 1929 ACE 4-6 (or is that 4.6?). I have no idea what the "ACE" part means which is why I typed that in full. If anyone else knows, can you please inform me? Ta muchly! :D Here's a photo of it anyway ... http://www.honeyshome.com/oz/jpg_A_086.htm Anyway, that's all that's on his headstone, but according to Fawkner records which I'd searched online before we headed down to Oz last March, his wife Ruby Beatrice IS buried with him, but no mention of her on the headstone!! Now the REALLY weird part is that Ruby died in 1926 and John died in 1929, so why wasn't HER name on the headstone and not HIS?!?!? Hmmmmmmmmm ... the plot thickens!! ;D Now if one of John and Ruby's descendants would just find my website and contact me, maybe I'll one day have the answer to this little mystery. And that's why I personally think publishing your tree on your own website is an excellent idea. I've had so many cousins contact me via my website and because of it I've received a heap of information, given back more than I was given AND corrected errors. I'm VERY happy I bought my own domain and upload updated trees on a regular basis!! :D Take care, Rob.
