oops - never mind - I just sent a reply to the wrong group - but that's OK - I've more info to add: Hi I'm sure plenty of people will help you .. on the electoral roll I've found a Walter James Phillips - orchadist - in Victoria - in 1909 in the Kangaroo Ground subdistrict - possibly him? Other people nearby on the elctoral roll also associated with fruit growing include what appears to be a husband and wife - Francis Knowles Phillips and Katherine MCPHERSON (the maiden name taken from the Vic BDM indexes)!! and nearby: a William McLennan PHILLIPS - all common scottish names so can't be sure - until you supply maybe just a little more info? Here's an interesting piece of info - the Vic index of Katherine's marriage to Francis in Victoria in 1877 indicates that Katherine Phillips nee McPherson was born in New York!!! and a death index suggests a Katherine Phillips nee mcPherson was born in the early 1850s (father James McPherson mother Mary Taylor). So having a mother born in the USA may inspire a person to go to South America to sell fruit tees? :) This may be wild speculation - it looks as though Katherine was born in the USA in about 1853 - but her family came to Victoria in the 1850s - attracted by the gold? Clearly a little more help is needed to sort this out .. do you know where Walter was born - you have his birth date - any idea of the location? It looks unlikely that he ws born in Victoria??? How sure are you of Walter's name? please advise. good luck & thankyou Robert in Melbourne Richard Bierregaard wrote: > Hello, > I'm trying to get more information on my grandfather's family. Hi Robert J. (from Melbourne), You seem to be on the right track. My great grandmother Katherine McPherson was born in the USA so that seems to be a match, as well as being orchardists. My grandfather's names are definitely Walter James, but I have no information on his birth site, just his birth date Apr 12, 1885. Is more information, birth, marriage and death dates on Katherine McPherson Phillips, Francis Knowles Phillips and any other family members available? This is exciting since it is definitely a match to what I know. Thanks! Richard Greenbelt, MD USA

Hello, I'm trying to get more information on my grandfather's family. Here is what I know: Walter James Phillips was born March 12, 1885 and emigrated to Argentina about 1905-08 where he married Lily Cleland Collins on August 4, 1910. His father Bill? Phillips had a fruit farm (apples & pears I believe). His mother, always referred to as Granny McPherson and here given name may have been Elizabeth (but it could be a grandmother). One other son was William or Will who married (unknown) and had at least one son Francis (Frank) who also lived with his family in Argentina but eventually moved back to Australia (Sydney). He married Sylvia ?? and had a daughter Gloria (I believe). I think Will had a daughter who remained in Australia. Other family members named were Florrie (Florence?), Percy and Lizzie (Elizabeth?) He and his brother Will were in the business of exporting fruit trees to Argentina. Any assistance on finding out about his family in Australia will be much appreciated. Thanks, Richard Greenbelt, Maryland USA

Angelica, Have you got full certificates for those born in Victoria ? There is a Fuller family in the 1841 census for England that fits your Fullers. They are in Surrey, Newington. The all appear to have been born in Surrey as well. Do you have a copy of this yet?
