    3. Hi, found this reference with a date error at the state library site; Photographer’s name and address printed on mount: Fraser, 30 Bridge Street. Ballarat. Mr. Leonard Fraser operated from 30 Bridge Street, Ballarat between 1914 and 1913. Mrs. C. Fraser operated at the same address from 1914 to1930. Ref.: *Australians behind the camera*, directory of early Australian photographers, 1841-1945 / Sandy Barrie, 2002. found at this location: http://sinpic.slv.vic.gov.au/cgi-bin/Pwebrecon.cgi?DB=local&BBID=163180&CNT=15 There seems to be some typo with the range of dates - 1914 and 1913 - I expect should have been written as 1891 and 1913 and at this address: http://www.geocities.com/vicphoto19c/willetts.html which is mainly about the well known? photographer George Willetts - we learn that the Frasers were Leonard Allan Fraser and Cora Beatrice Fraser nee Willetts - George Willetts daughter - Willetts had a studio at 30 Bridge st. Ballarat before the Frasers operated a studio from the same address...it appears that George Willetts gave up his Ballarat studio in 1891 - Cora and Leonard married in 1891 - so I imagine there's every chance that sometime after 1891 if not earlier, there was a Fraser studio in Ballarat. Leonard Allan Fraser died in 1913 in Ballarat - and it looks as though his wife Cora continued with the business for many years. Cora died in 1939. and this little piece of info from genanz archives: George Willett was in Sturt St from 1869- & 1888-1896 Bridge St 1888-1891 (Willett's Royal Photographic Temple of Light) The Temple of Light - a wonderful name for a studion or an Indiana jones movie. :) In short Fraser was indeed in Ballarat and certainly taking pictures in 1898. good luck Robert Norman Archibald wrote: > Dear Listers, > Would anyone on the list have a copy of the book, "The Mechanical Eye". > I have a marvellous photo of a wedding group that I am trying to ID. > According to whats written on the back of the photo, the wedding is suppose to have taken place in Ballarat around 1898. > The photo was taken by a professional photographer named "FRASER".. > If he features in "The Mechanical Eye", I have a chance of perhaps proving the date to be correct. > Norm. > > ------------------------------- > To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to [email protected] with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message > > >

The Mechanical Eye and the IIlustrated Book by Robert Holden, or The Mechanical Eye in Australia photography 1841-1900 by Alan DAVIES & Peter STANBURY? Thank you Sue

    3. Dear Listers, Would anyone on the list have a copy of the book, "The Mechanical Eye". Norm.

    3. Hi All, Does anyone have the book "James Hodgkinson and his life at Woodstock Station" by Rita Hull, who could lookup JAMES HEPBURN for me? I found a record on the 1856 Electoral Roll - Talbot, Daisy Hill for Hepburn, James - Woodstock, Lexton - factory salary - 150 pounds a year received from James Hodgkinson, Woodstock. Any mention of James HEPBURN in the book? Or even James HEYBURN? -- Kind regards, Julie in Cairns mailto:[email protected]

    1. REYNOLDS, WILLIAM H MINING ENGINEER
    2. Sallie Ramsay
    3. William H REYNOLDS b c 1827 in Shropshire arrived with his family aboard the ship "Kent" in September 1867 at Hobson's Bay in Victoria. He is described in the 1861 Census (Cornwall) as a mine manager living in Redruth and in 1851 as a mining engineer. He married Grace WILLEY in Helston, Cornwall in 1853. The children were Editha, William H junior, Mabel, Edwin, John A and Theodora, his sister-in-law Mary WILLEY was also aboard the 'Kent'. Between the time the family landed in Hobson's Bay and a record of the death of Theodora in Scone eight years later, I can find no trace of the family. From BDM NSW it seems the family settled in the Central West of NSW. It seems possible that given his qualifications William headed for the Victorian Goldfield before moving north. My great grandmother's younger sister Ursula ROBERTS came out on the same voyage, Ursula's aunt Ursula PEARCE married a Henry REYNOLDS born in Cornwall and I am trying to establish what link if any there maybe between Ursula ROBERTS and the two REYNOLDS families. (The PEARCE and Henry REYNOLDS farms are very c lose to Redruth.) Any information about this family or ideas where I could search further would be welcomed. Thank you Sallie

    3. Hello all, I am looking for some assistance to locate a picture of a canvas funnel / wind sail / Californian hat / etc. used by miners in the 1800's. Known by these and probably other names, this item could either be 1. shaped like a funnel, one end being placed over a mine shaft and the other end faced into the wind, the wind being directed into the funnel and down into the shaft to give the miners fresh air, or alternatively 2. slung from trees like a boat sail to gather air which would be directed down into the mine shaft. I have tried the obvious sites like Picture Australia, National Archives, etc. and am at a loss to actually find a photo/sketch. Is anyone able to help at all? Many thanks. Jan Shaw.

    3. Hi, I hope I'm not following the wrong family here - but this looks a little like the death of Katherine McPherson's mother Mary McPherson nee Taylor: Digger - Death Index. Victoria 1921-1985 Surname: MCPHERSON Given Names: Mary Father: Taylor David Mother: Cath GALLOWAY Death Place: BALWYN Age: 93 Age Code: Year: 1921 Reg Number: 8366 Event: D If this information is correct then it looks as though Mary Taylor was born in about 1828 - father David Taylor and mother Catherine Galloway. the age would certainly fit with Katherine being born in the early 1850s. And this entry from the IGI: ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- MARY TAYLOR Female Event(s): Birth: 18 APR 1828 Abbotshall, Fife, Scotland Parents: Father: DAVID TAYLOR Family Mother: CATHERINE GALLOWAY Source Information: Batch No.: Dates: Source Call No.: Type: Printout Call No.: Type: C113998 1818 - 1855 0993525 Film 6900188 Film ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Would seem to be the same person. The only river is the Plenty, which rises in the Dividing range, and falls into the Yarra, a distance of about 30 miles. The district is both agricultural and pastoral. The nearest village is Whittlesea, about 6 miles JT.E. of. Yan Yean, situated on the S. side of the Dividing range. It, as well as Melbourne (19 miles), is reached by coach daily. Yan Yean is under the Whittlesea shire council, and in the electoral district of East Bourke and Evelyn. The population is about 300. Cheers Avril Dalby
