HI List, In a Castlemaine Book shop yesterday I bought a little book called 'The Calder Highway". Melbourne to Mildura: opening the Victorian Inland. I haven't read it all yet, it has 128 pages, but covers nearly every little town along the route of the Calder Highway. The photos are terrific; mostly from time gone by, and a couple of the new road works. It has a little picture of a Cobb and Co Coach arriving at the Adelphi Hotel at Elphinstone. (from the S.C. Breese Latrobe Collectiion) I love it for the history of my area and think it may interest others who have an interest in the areas covered in the book. Howard Carr is a local Castlemaine district resident and the book published in 2006. Has anyone else read and enjoyed it? Thanks.....Bev
Hi Sharon Here, here, as Peter says, have some fun. I have been married for just on 50 yrs and still enjoy a little bit of humour at times - although I would rather have white - blast those histamines!!! Dear Sharon, Don't feel too bad, quite a few of us have made similar mistakes... I once sent a 'funny' email to my address book friends and discovered that I'd included most of the teachers at my son's boarding school.... Anyway, considering how hard and disappointing daily life was for most of our ancestors on the goldfields, I'm wondering whether their days were lightened by a good sense of humour. Greetings What has the rubbish on Vol3 Issue 244, About PMS got to do with this great site. Bill
Dear Listers While researching a family member in the Victorian Digger Index, I found an abbreviation for a birthplace I don't recognize. It was entered in 1871 for a birth in 1820 (on a marriage entry) It was: KINGS CO Looks like Kings College to me, but that's ridiculous. I know there was or is a Kingstown in Dublin. Is this familiar to anyone? Cheers Rowena ( in Melbourne)
Hey, don't worry Sharon. All good fun. Some of these lists need a bit of lightening up! We've all made mistakes and inadvertently sent things to various addresses that we didn't intend to. As an old married codger of 49 and a bit years I relate very strongly to the "Here, have a glass of wine" the older of the tworobbos
Dear List I have inadvertantly sent an email to the list which was not intended. Please accept my apaologies and I hope I have not offended anyone. regards Sharon Finn (mortified!)

Below is information from a publication which a friend found on the internet and forwarded to me. North Central Goldfields Project Historic Mining Sites in the Taradale Mining Division October 1992 - Journey into history up the Campaspe River. Author John Linder Gold Mining and the Taafe Brothers Gold Mining and the Taafe Brothers The next feature of interest is a group of very deep gold mine shafts, on the steep slope of the west bank. It is very rare to find the remains of any wooden parts of such mines, but there is a part of a stamping battery, which in 1990 still had the curved lifting rods of the camshaft. Although they may not have been the first, this site was occupied at one time by the Taafe brothers, Nicholas and George, who lived further up the hill at what is now 'Birran Birran'. Early in the century, the Taafe brothers also held the licence for the Mia Mia hotel, before the licence finally expired..19[1] [Much of the historical information presented here was gleaned from Mr Jack Ross (a brother of our club member Maisie Ross), a long time resident and local historian of the Mia Mia area, who very kindly gave me his time to recount what he knew. My grandfather was the George Taafe mentioned. Could anyone enlighten me as to where I might be able to do further research? I have read the book 'McIvor - A History of the Shire and the Township of Heathcote by J O Randell' Thanks in anticipation Barbara L.
Interested in hearing from anyone connected to John Sydney Sartori...born about 1926 ..son of Charles Sartori & Elsie Young... married Mavis Wright.... Lillian
Thanks Robert for your help. I'll see if the State Library or SAG have these directories. I wasn't aware that the Sands was in Victoria as Ancestry only has it in N.S.W. There were large Hollander families, but lots of them remained single, so there aren't so many of us now. Lewis did originally come to Australia in 1857, married and had 4 children then they went back to Liverpool, had another 4 children (including my grandmother), then came back to Melbourne in 1868, and settled in Ballarat, where another 8 children were born. That was 16 in all although 3 of them didn't survive. I've just found out that in 1871 he was made insolvent with assets of only 1 Pound, while he was in Ballarat. I'm wondering how he kept his then seven children with 1 Pound. Still he must have liked Australia because another brother George Reuben came here in 1869, although he didn't stay. Then Jacob arrived with 7 children in 1870, and went on to have another 6. Jacob was a member of the Ballarat Jewish Synagogue and he is mentioned in a book "Formula for Survival, the story of the Ballarat Jewish Synagogue", so I know a bit about him, but not about Lewis in his time in Ballarat, and that is what I'm looking for.
