I have found a Will with the name of James Wilmot a cattle classer. I am wondering if this is the James I am seeking and wondered if anyone may have a cd giving information on his death, at least a number 26 Oct 1898. Also a birth of a Robert Arthur Wilmot which if my chap would be sometime from 1868. 1868 is when he left his wife and I lost track of him. Would be very grateful for any help that may be offered. Best wishes Marie

Dear List, re the new online PROV wills and probae index. Thus far some pre 1900 names seem to have been digitized, but many I was searching for have an index entry but the full record not digistised. Does anyone know the time from on this? Good morning, Several years back there were some postings regarding William LAVENDER's obit from the "History of Kyneton" Vol 1. I am researching the Lavenders and wondered if anyone has access to this book and could kindly pass on a transcript of that obituary? He was a magistrate in 1856 and died in Fitzroy in 1870. I'm in London, England so unfortunately not able to put my hands on a copy. Any assistance would be surely appreciated. Kind regards Debra Andreassen
Dear people, One of my connections is recorded as being born in "New Canada " according to his 1871 Victorian marriage record. Would anyone on the list know where "New Canada" was situated back in 1871. Norman A.

Well, Robert........thanks soooo much for the reminder of the PRO indexes and in particular the wills index. I have just searched the wills database, and bingo, I have already found two om my lot..... so I am busy printing at the moment. How wonderful it is to be able to see these documents. One of them I found has actually given me the proof I needed to "break down a brick wall". Thanks again, Val. (very hot and humid Queensland)
hi all, I don't know whether this has been widely advertised - haven't noticed it - so I thought you may like to know that the Vic Public Records Office have released for testing - a searchable online version of the Vic Probate Index for 1841 to 1925 ... This is a wonderful development for historians and family researchers .. the probate indexes generally contain the death date, occupation, residence - often removing the need to purchase death certifcates - . but that is not all ... If the actual probate document is digitized then it appears possible to access it as a PDF image - an option which has been available for some time - but with the added benefit provided by the searchable index - an invaluable addition to any serious researchers toolbox. here's the address: > http://proarchives.imagineering.com.au/index_search.asp?searchid=54 Enjoy ... lets hope the site doesn't fall over due to popularity :) cheers Robert

I am looking for further info on Thomas Matthews, he lived in the Snake Valley area outside of Ballarat in the 1850's originally from Armagh, Ireland. His wife Eliza Jane (nee White),also from Armagh, and I am very keen to find out info on his brother William also in the area at that time. I have bought some certs, relating to William but it is not my William, if you are looking for a cert for William, parents Robert and Grace (nee Palmer) let me know. Also a William who died in 1913 at Ballarat East. farmer age about 81yrs born in Cambridge England I have that one too. I have listed all my certs on www.ausbdm.org.au Cheers, Angelica

Hi Rowena I am probably jumping at shadows as you do not say in just what part of the world this place might be. Suspecting it might be Oz, I found a place in S. A. called Kingscote - principal town and port on Kangaroo Island. In 1883 name was changed to Queenscliffe but the name of Kingscote was eventually reinstated. (Reed, A. W., Place Names of Australia, 1973, Reed Books Pty Ltd, Sydney) I will keep an eye open in other places to see what I can find ----- Original Message ----- From: "Rowena Gough" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Friday, November 28, 2008 6:31 AM Subject: Birthplace Abbreviation Help > Dear Listers > > > > While researching a family member in the Victorian Digger Index, I found > an > abbreviation for a birthplace I don't recognize. Thank you to all the kind listers who responded - and the extra information much appreciated. I'm not too familiar with Ireland as minimal Irish presence in my tree.
