    3. Hi, first of all - some observations on the info supplied - The marriage of Charlotte HOLT to John William STUBBS was registered in Victoria Australia because that is where the couple was married - Buckinghamshire appears in the index as the birthplace - not the marriage place. Please be a little cautious with LDS member information. It is well known that some enthusiastic members of the LDS have made mistakes - so please try to find parish records rather than trust the say so of an LDS member - Checking the www.freebmd.org.uk site we learn that The marriage of James Jacob STUBBS to Hannah WILLIAMS was regsitered in the Hackney District, in the June quarter of 1842. Checking the census info for 1851 and 1861 and accepting that some of the family came to Australia aboard the Champion of the Sea in 1864 - there seems to be no evidence that Hannah WILLIAMS had Stafford as another surname - On the contrary - there is some evidence to suggest that WILLIAMS was Hannah's maiden surname - it was used as the second name for daughter Anne and quite possibly for son John - a couple of the index records for Victoria record births to John WILLIAMS Stubbs and Charlotte Holt. By the way - John and Charlotte certainly had a number of children but about 5 of these children died at a very early age - most of the children were born in the Dunolly Wycheproof Charlton region of Victoria - reasonably close to Mildura to encourage family to settle there? Hannah's birth place is recorded as Surrey in both the 1851 and 1861 census records. The Vic indexes indicate that an Arthur STUBBS son of Arthur O'Neil STUBBS (John William(s) STUBBS's brother) died in Mildura in 1926. The William STUBBS family of Tarnagulla? It appears there was a William STUBBS married to a Kate KIRWAN in Victoria in 1856 and the couple had a few children - one or two had their births registered in TARNAGULLA - proving a connection between the this Stubbs family that arrived in Victoria as early as 1856 to the Stubbs family that arrived in 1864 is going to be very difficult using the information supplied - please re-organise your data into something a little more cohesive and re-state exactly what you are after? Do want to know what happened to the STUBBS children that arrived on the Champion of the Sea? Or do you want to know about James Jacob STUBBS and his parents, grandparents etc.? The 1861 census shows that Hannah is the head of the household and she is shown as a married woman - no mention of her husband - I wonder where was he? good luck Robert in Melbourne. mballe wrote: > I am attempting to trace the family of STUBBS, John William [John aged 22 at marriage - he came out to OZ at aged 18 - went back to England and married] CM 941319 > Marriage Spouse: HOLT, Charlotte Marriage Place: Buckinghamshire Reg Year: 1868 Reg State: Victoria Ref Number 302 - Died 1922 #1189 at Dford - buried Daylesford 10 January 1922 aged 76. > father of John William Stubbs, Jas [James] Jacob Stubbs - mother Hannah Williams[Stafford appears to be Hannah's maiden name a- she was born in Thadwell England] John William Stubbs > wife Charlotte Holt Stubbs died Oct 1933 aged 57- buried at Daylesford. > > John William Stubbs came out to Australia on the Champion of the Sea, ship in 1864 along with 5 siblings and their mother. > John William Stubbs and Charlotte had 11 children > > Part of this family is some how or another related to the William Stubbs family of Tarnagulla > I know that some of this family ended up in Mildura - and someone has done some genealogy work on the family as I've found it in the LDS's records. 2. Ann Kerin
    3. Dear List I have a great great grandfather who went missing and was said to have 'fallen down a mine shaft'. It's probably more likely that he just left but I can't find any record of his death - so wonder if there might have been an inquest. His name was William John BECKWITH born 1833 in Huntingdonshire, England. The last I heard of him was in September 1878 when he left the Education department (Head teacher at Wedderburn)under circumstumstances involving accusations of 'intemperance' and 'arguments with his wife'. Eliza Beckwith died in 1926 and her obit says that her husband 'prededeased her by many years'. If anyone has access and time to do a look up in of inquests around 1878 onwards I would appreciate it. Many thanks Ann (Beckwith) Kerin > --- >

Like I said to someone earlier I do remember meeting her in 1984 when I visited my Aunty at Broughton Hall & she was definitely alive & well then. The question now is: is this the right Queenie? On these indexes is it possible to look for names by christian name alone?? Queenie is not very common so maybe looking for a Queenie who died after 1884?? I'll see if my 3 remaining disks will work. Frederick & Rebecca married 1887. Frederick was born 1863 at Landsborough, Vic to Henry Richard DORMAN & Sarah Ann ARNOLD. Frederick & Sarah married 1863 maybe at St Arnaud. I found on IGI: Henry Richard DORMAN born 3Dec1833, bap 10Aug1834, Chelmsford, Essex. son of Richard DORMAN & Ann Henry married Ann Filbrick/Philbrick 3Dec1831 Surrey. There is more but I know this is not my Dorman line. My Dormans were from London & I can go back to Stephen DORMAN m Charlotte Poulton in 1821 I think. He was born before 1800 I don't know where. Thanks for your help everyone, very good list. Cheers. Annie from Cairns, Aus.

    3. Thank you everybody for the many helpful replies both on- and off-list. Yes, it is the Craigie school. As Susie says, even the fine detail of the stone jointing matches. The nearest we can pin down the date is about 1895-6. By comparing a baby photo that an aunt had, my grandfather is the little guy at front far left with the lace collar. It must have been his first year at school, and he was b. August 1891, so I guess about 4 1/2 years old. (They started school fairly young back then, didn't they?) Not sure why there are only boys -- perhaps the girls were photgraphed seperately. For anyone interested in the Majorca school, there is a photo of it in 1973 in the slv collection, and it is indeed brick. http://www.slv.vic.gov.au/jcollins/0/1/1/doc/jc011478.shtml Thanks again, John. 3. I have been trying to trace for many years what happened to my ancestor John MURRAY a miner John was probably born about 1823 in Paisley Scotland.[.information from the only birth registration that I have found of his children-- of son Andrew..b 1853] John was informant on his wife's [ Jane MURRAY ms Murray]death certificate in April 1883.who died and was buried at Wedderburn He is not in the Wedderburn burial register. I have had a search done for his death in Victoria for another 20 years after this without success. John Murray was still paying rates on land at Bocca Flat in about 1886, after which I have lost track of him. His children that I know of: 1. May Ann b abt1846 Richmond m John SINCLAIR in 1864 but by 1884 was living at Balranald in N.S.W. Mary Ann died in 1911 at Moulamein NSW 2, David Murray b abt 1851 where? 3 Andrew b 1853 Wedderburn 4 Henry b abt 1855 His wife Jane's parents were Thomas MURRAY and Eliza Reynolds..from her death certificate. so I am guessing that 2 of the children MIGHT have his parent's names. They were supposedly married at Scots Church Melbourne in 1844 but I've found no record of that [there seem to be very few marriages recorded there for that year so records are probably missing] I have also no idea at all where the boys ended up..I am a descendant of Mary Ann. I was wondering if perhaps Police Gazettes might be an option? or electoral rolls. Any other ideas? I have so little information about him that a death certificate would be of help . Judy Qld

    3. Hi, I had a brief look at the Vic indexes and noticed that there was another child not included in the list - in 1891 a daughter Emily was born to James Taylor and Ellen White at Kangaroo Flat. May I ask - where is Clippenham in Victoria? Is it a property name? looking at the electoral rolls it is noted in 1936 May aka Maisie and Valentine DONOWA were registered to vote in Bankstown NSW - perhaps the rest of the Taylor family were also in NSW? in 1909 an Ellen TAYLOR and a Jessie TAYLOR were both registered to vote at "FAIRVIEW", Bramble Street, Bendigo - I wonder whether this is the 2 daughters Ellen and Jessie? or possibly mother Ellen and daughter Jessie? or maybe not related at all? Anyhow - common names such as White and Taylor do present many problems Perhaps some answers are availbale on the death cert. for James in 1904 and the marriage cert. for Maisie in 1922. maisie's birth certificate would also help out with information concerning siblings? Maybe Maisie's death cert. in Bankstown in 1966 would help? Checking the Bendigo newspapers for James TAYLOR obits may also assist.... does the Ballarat archives office have microfilm of Bendigo newspapers for 1904? good luck Robert in Melbourne one time owner of a cottage in Cosmo Rd .... It is the primary resource for data on 19th century Australia ...www.nla.gov.au/argus/ - 9k - Cached - Similar pages The argus is one paper. The Sun did not start until 1922 The other I cannot think of its name but i will find out at the library today if you have had no luck with other respondents. Fortunately, the time frame is covered for 1919. It is a wonderful resouce. There are so many Taylors that I can't seem to find anything at all on this particular family perhaps if they had middle names it would be easier. 3. Hi Folks, I've sent a document and photo to John which shows it is definitely the Craigie School - can even count and match the same shape bluestones in the wall behind the kids. Craigie School No. 1062, Maryborough-Majorca Road (Albert Street), Craigie Built 1870-71 The heritage citation also comments on the variations in the size of the bluestone blocks in the extension. The current building has an additional external brick chimney just to the left of the kids. So those who had opted for Craigie are spot on! The building has local heritage protection - HO100, Central Goldfields Shire. Regards ......... 3. Hi John I'm going to concur with John on Craigie. I checked the image with my mother who was born in Maryborough, and she double checked with a friend from Majorca. The only building they thought likely is in Craigie. John, I would be pretty sure that it is not Majorca as that school was constructed of red-brick. The only one I know of bluestone in the district iwould be at Craigie - about half-way to Maryborough from Majorca. That building still stands although has been a private residence for many years.
