    3. Hi all, The Marchioness of Salisbury arrived in Geelong on about the 21 February 1855, having left Plymouth on about the 22 November 1854. A short account of the voyage by James DAVIES appears at this website: > http://www.ballaratgenealogy.org.au/art/davies.htm The passenger list for the Marchioness of Salisbury appears online at the Vic Public Records Office website: Index to Assisted British Immigration 1839-1871 > http://proarchives.imagineering.com.au/Index_search.asp?searchid=24 The passenger list suggests that there were about 243 assisted passengers - closer examination of the list suggests that almost half the number of passengers were females travelling alone or in the company of sister(s) and they were mostly in the age range of 18 to 24 years - certainly eligible young ladies. The surnames of these women suggest that most if not all, originated from Ireland. A "bride ship" ???? With atleast half the passengers being young single or widowed women from Ireland (hoping to marry in the near future?) - I expect that the Marchioness of Salisbury could satisfy a definition of a "bride ship" ?? good luck Robert in cooler Melbourne. 3. Thanks so much for this information, Mary. Given the lack of information in the death summaries, I think I'll just pursue the death at sea first. However, top priority now seems to be obtaining the death certificate of a JOHN Cuthbertson in Ballarat, whose death in 1880, aged 65, has Robert Cuthbertson and Ellen Liddell as his parents. My James Cuthbertson had parents Robert, and Helen Riddell, and would have been 63 in 1880. The similarity seems uncanny. James' brother John died as a 15 year old, so it's possible that, on the other side of the world from Scotland, it didn't matter that he used Jack/John instead of Jim/Jas/James. I am grateful to Lister Margaret Trewick for spotting this similarity. Thanks to you both, Tom _________________________________________________________________ It's simple! 3. Hi Wilma, Just reading your message again, if you were to order the death certificates from https://online.justice.vic.gov.au/bdm/index-search?action=purchaseImage, Victorian death certificates list all children and their ages at the time of the parents death. They also list parents names, place of birth, marriage & length of time in Australia. Australian Census records few and far between and you have to be pretty lucky to find any detailed information Regards Mary -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Claymore Sent: Tuesday, 27 January 2009 12:26 PM To: [email protected] Subject: RE: Patterson/McNeil Hi Listers, This is my 1st posting to the site, in fact I am a complete novice at searching Australia. He was born to Robert Cuthbertson, a quarryman or stonemason, and Helen Riddell (or Riddle, or similar), and christened at Kilmaurs, Ayrshire on 3/9/1817. He's listed as arriving in December 1854, aged 37, at Port Phillip on the Storm Cloud, with Janet, aged c.23. Family lore has it that they became separated on the goldfields and she never saw him again, and there has been no other information handed down on him. Given that Janet signed her marriage at Ballarat in 1856 with a cross, it's quite possible that he was quite nearby to her, in her long life just outside Maryborough, but that she was deterrred in the effort to find him. James and Jane's siblings were, at least, Marion, c.1819, John c.1822, Margaret Tod, c.1825, Robert c.1827, Helen c.1831, William c.1834 and David c.1836. I'm providing the sibling information in case someone can spot something from the Scottish naming pattern in the children of a James. Unless James was lying, he is NOT the James Cuthbertson who married Jessie Watson on November 1859 at Spring Hill, Pentland Hills, because that James was born in North Sutherland, England, and had the father George. (Much of the rest of the copy of that marriage entry is unreadable, but for any lister who may be interested, the page also includes the marriage of William Grant and Elizabeth Patterson on 23/11/1859 at Bacchus Marsh, and of George Lindsay and Ann(e) Davies on December 5, at what looks like Collingwood, but seems out of territory. 3. Hi Mary, Jan, Kerri, Maree, Ave, (My apologies if I have missed anyone) I will be responding off-line to Thank you personally. WOW! My sincere Thanks for all the information I received regarding Margaret, Janet, Maryann McNeil. You have been most helpful helping me to trace the McNeil Family. What a great list......... Catherine (sister born after Maryann) married Alexander McDonald in 1847 then she disappears. I did find her in the 1871 Scottish Census living with her brother Donald and Family, then she disappears again. Dare I hope that she is also in Australia also! I will find her one of these days I am sure. Your response was overwhelming. Looks like I have quite a number of Family in Australia. I thought I was lucky a number of years ago when my Aunt told me about a cousin (1st cousin once removed) in Sydney. She is 92 years of age and has been an absolute delight to talk to. She had been looking for my MacNeil Family most of her life so she was just delighted when I contacted her. You have all been extremely generous with your information and I am just over the moon. Now I will have to sit back and digest it all. Thank You all for the wonderful information you have supplied. 3. Dear all, I recently joined the Goldfields list after an absence of a few years so I thought I would introduce myself and my family interests. Both sides of my family came to the Bendigo/Eaglehawk areas in the 1850s and I'm still there! Family names include: Hooley (England/Sth Africa), McMahon (Ireland), Meurillion (France), Franscella (Switzerald), Gagetti (Italy) and related families. I would love to make contact and exchange information with anyone researching these families. Best wishes, Marg Watson.
