Hi Paul The last time I was at the Ballarat Archives I came across this abbreviation. It was explained to me that OGNK stood for "Old Ground Not Known" - no section or location numbers known. My lady was ill and died in hospital 1869 and it was also explained that she may have been buried in a paupers grave and that the hospital made a monetary admittance for the burial. Maybe others can through some more light on the subject for you. Hope this helps. It was a special edition for the 1866 Exhibition in Melbourne. They actually pasted in real photographs on the pages! Have you seen it? Regards Ada Ackerly

G'day Ada, I have travelled through the Avenues of Honour around the Ballarat area off and on for nearly 50 years. On every trip there seems to be evidence of more missing trees or more neglect. Perhaps this is another example of "Lest We Forget" becoming less meaningful with the passage of time! The index opened by Weary Dunlop a few years ago was certainly a good thing. Paul, from what you're saying, you should call up the cemetery and get them to check the dates of burial and on hte headstone for you. They might just have all of that without having to go look at the stone. At worst they'll make you write and possibly send a fee. I have been the list admin for many a year, and have been less engaged in my genealogy at the moment, and not done much encouragement on list for quite a period. The back-end stuff is easy, and not time-consuming, though in reflection, I think that I should see if there was someone interested in taking on the role and creating a more engaging list community. RootsWeb HelpDesk: List Administrators, Rules and Duties http://helpdesk.rootsweb.com/listadmins/duties.html If no one wishes to take the role, that isn't a problem as I can keep on with the gentle bits that exist Regards Andrew List-admin AUS-VIC-GOLDFIELDS mailing list

Hi Carolyn, The History Research Centre of the Maldon Museum & Archives Association holds a file containing some history of this family, plus the contact for a 2006 researcher of this family. Seven thousand more Index entries to the local paper, the Tarrangower Times have become available since then, (but I have not searched them for your names). You can contact our Research Coordinator at tony@maldonmuseum,com.au for the information. There will be a charge because the records are not held in cyberspace, but on computers and in hard copy, which require storage facilities which require premises, which require maintaining etc., etc. Best regards, Tom Woolman, Convener, District Museum Group Maldon Museum & Archives Association Inc. www.maldonmuseum.com.au

Oops, sorry folks, I forgot to include for those who don't know where the Goldfields List Archives are, they are at http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/search?path=AUS-VIC-GOLDFIELDS. (You might want to bookmark them now :) ) Every List has an easily and comprehensively searchable set of archives like these, which are accessed through the home page for each list. Home pages can be found by going to http://bigfile.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/listsearch, or if you forget, just googling for " rootsweb mailing list" And while I think of it, the address for Google's scan of "The Age" (Melbourne) up to the 1950's (which was done by them, and not by any Public Library in Australia, so is a bit different in what it can do) is at http://news.google.com/archivesearch/advanced_search Cheers, Tom
Hi Judy, why is "everything" on this weekend - Maldon Folk Festival, 150th celebrations for the rush to Moonambel, the opening of an ancient stone house in Castlemaine which has taken years to restore ........ BTW, there HAS been some interest in McIntryes on this list, admittedly some time ago, and some of it was from me, writing under my nom-de-net (Tom Listerman). Hope it's a great occasion!! Hi Pam, Yes, Maldon is slap bang in the middle of the official area of this list, which is defined as the Goldfields within the triangle of Ballarat to Bendigo to Maryborough Districts - but of course, they are only the CENTRAL Goldfields, and the list contains much information on the many other goldfields in Victoria (though researchers should also always search in the relevant geographical list (Gippsland, Central, etc). I suggest you write to the the local the newspaper, the Tarrangower Times PO Maldon 3463. They may reprint a short request for a former resident to make contact. Che Cheers, Tom
