    3. Kim In relation to Sarah Tacey, is it possible that she married again? I cannot see her death on ancestry.com.au Interesting there are a number of Sarah Taceys married to Thomas in UK records. 1. TACEY in Amherst
    2. McNamara & Andrews
    3. I'm new to the Goldfields list, and my areas of research in this part of the world are TACEY, SEYMOUR, and IVES. At the moment I have a brick wall in the form of Sarah Tacey, wife of Thomas Tacey, who lived in the Amherst area from about 1855, and was alive in 1870 when she was admitted to Amherst hospital. I can't find any record of her death or burial so if this rings a bell with any other listers I'd be thrilled to receive any advice you can offer. Kim Andrews

Geraldina May was always known as Geraldina May Bosworth and used that birth date. However, her birth certificate gives the parents as Thomas Henerey 36 Mine Manager of Dunnolly and Victoria Henerey, aged 23 nee Thompson born Castlemaine. The family moved to New Zealand Shortly after the birth of Geraldina. Does SKS have the list of Mine Managers in Dunnolly and can assist me with any information please. Regards Sharon In Sydney

    3. Hi Kate, Volumes 2 & 3 of An Index to the Tarrangower Times, the Maldon newspaper, cover issues from 1872-8 and have 20 references to newspaper articles which refer to Ryland - either George, or his son Richard, who had a drapery in Maldon 1876-8, or just "Captain" of the Mt Alexander Battalion, or just "Mr". The actual articles are available from the Maldon History Research Centre (www.maldonmuseum.com.au) for $1 per A4 sheet, bearing in mind that most articles are in long columns and require more than one sheet to print them off. For general information, Volume 1 of the Index covers the period from the first surviving Times in June 1858 to January 1862. An Indexer is working on 1B which will fill some of the gap between 1 & 2, and another indexer is working on Volume 4, which extends beyond 1878. More indexers are required. Interested people may contact me for further information. 3. I am interested in another Castlemaine draper: George Britomart Ryland (abt 1827-1900). He and his wife Christina and son arrived in Victoria in May 1854 on the Guiding Star. There were 6 children, 3 of whom were born in Castlemaine. I have a fair amount of detail about the family, but my chief interest lies in the fact that George Britomart Ryland was the first named executor of the estate of my ggrandfather John Handford HARDY who died 20 June 1870 in Chewton. The son, Frederick John Handford HARDY was left an orphan at the age of about 8-10, and I know nothing more about him until 1886 when he was practising as a dentist in Castlemaine. Somebody must have looked after this little boy. Perhaps there might be some clues from George Britomart Ryland. 3. Hi Valerie, I don't log on to rootsweb very often, but noticed that several people had responded to your query. They may or may not have mentioned there were several newspapers which may have information you seek. There are microfilms in the State Library of Victoria in Melbourne, but perhaps you are interstate. The relevant ones would be: - Majorca News, April 1863 to Jan 1864 is on film - Talbot Leader (formerly North-West Chronicle) from Sept 1860 onwards - Maryborough and Dunolly Advertiser, 1857 onwards Hope this may be of some small help. 2. Valerie
    3. Dawn and Lois, thank you both very much, it may just be that he bought the land and then moved on. There was a notice in a melb paper from his distressed wife, who after arriving from England with three little girls, apparently could not find him, it was a missing person notice, she remarried two years later stating he was dead! The ad said he had been in the Maryborough district, then we found his name listed as buying land in Craigie, so the location fits and it was him. He never remarried, what happened who knows, but with such a long voyage, no communications during that time, things could easily go wrong. I'll check out the links kindly provided. We travel through to Vic every couple of years, so will detour and have a look at the area. How lovely to have been able to have bought the school!! Valerie

    3. Hi Valerie Craigie is very close to Maryborough. Still there, about ten houses only these days. The old school closed over 50 years ago, maybe 70 or more, and is now - or was, about four or five years back, a private home. It took about 7 mins to drive into the heart of Maryborough when I was there looking at the old school when it was for sale about five years ago. (we did not buy it.) It is not all that much further from Talbot either - totally the opposite direction - and about the same from Majorca - which has ruins and again about five families living there. A creek is nearby - think McCallums Creek - you might want to look at that area too - probably only about 300 yds away! I am sure all of these places were thriving with gold, but once it stopped for whatever reason, people would have moved away and I think they are all pretty well "ghost" towns / areas nowadays. Maryborough and Talbot would be the places I would look - and maybe Carisbrook. Googlemap them and you will see how close they all are. 1. RE: Thomas Mason at Creswick and Benalla Part 2
    2. Geoff Stevenson
    3. Hi there, Thank you to Michele, Phoebe, Marg M., Mary S., Lyn, and Robyn for your prompt responses. Wonderful and I appreciate your ideas. It would seem that I did not make it clear that my request was specific to TM's times in the Creswick and Benalla areas between 1855 and about 1860. My research has had limited success in those locations - I had already spent a lot of time accessing the NLA/Argus, Family Search, BMD, Vic State Archives etc with some interesting results for earlier and later periods. I was not previously aware of the Vic. Gov. Gazette website but will find it useful henceforth. At this time I now understand there may have been newspapers at Creswick and Benalla from this era but they have not been digitized by the NLA so it seems I will have to wait for these to be available via the Internet. I am descended from TM's third daughter born at Benalla in 1858 and my principle interest is in the family's activities - ie occupation, business if any, community and church etc. TM had a long family history back in England of being in the Quaker faith but there is no recorded civil registered marriage until 1868 so perhaps there was a Non Conformist marriage earlier as alluded to in the Birth entries for his daughters. I have copies of the entries etc and earlier shipping records etc so kind of have a basic outline - just curious about their lives and times. In the 1960s I talked to one of her sons - my late grandfather was another but he died in 1925 - and learnt of some very colourful stories so am following up from this perspective. Finally I acknowledge the comment about how to reply to this website and the consequences of using the "reply key" and not the "new Key". I use several other Rootsweb websites and Hotmail. Replies are clearly intended to be activated by the "reply key" - it automatically picks up the correct address - but the consequence is that the prior correspondence or "tail" on the current edition of the website is included and can amount to a lot of redundant material. This can only be avoided by using a Hotmail option to bypass such or by proceeding to highlight and delete the "tail" before hitting the "send key". I have remembered to do so in this instance but note that few ever do so in practice. The impact on requiring extra disk storage space is not significant in this age of massive Disk capacity - as an "old" software coder from 1961-65 when we had a total of 4k of such storage on primitive GE and IBM machines it was critical but nowadays I hardly even think about it. Hope this will be understood to be in good faith and I certainly dont want to be in any way vexatious. Again, thanks to all, Geoff.S. (Blaine, Washington, USA)

    3. As I'm not familiar with Craigie area, wondering if anyone can tell me if there was a newspaper published in the area in the 1850's or other records that might be helpful in tracing a family member who we know bought land there around this time. Have his death records, he died in Melbourne, but trying to fill in pieces, hopefully. Many thanks and any advice would be much appreciated. Kind Regards Valerie

    3. Hi Elizabeth, Alexandrina (Kitty)Munro is one of my mob as she was the sister of my Great Great Grandmother Johan McKenzie Munro. Alexandrina was also the sister of James Munro M.L.A. who was at one time Premier of Victoria. Stangely I still havent found out where Colin And Alexandrina are buried. Both left Wills, which can be downloaded from the Victorian Public Records Office, and while I have not ascertained the exact date of death for Colin I do know he was in Castlemaine Hospital as reported in the Mount Alexander Mail Castlemaine Monday May 30 1887 Many residents of the district will remember Mr. Colin M'Leay, who for many years, carried out the drapery business in Market Square. He had been absent from Castlemaine for a considerable period, and returned a few days ago in a very delicate state of health. Yesterday he was admitted to the Hospital suffering from an epileptic fit, having been seized with it whilst stopping at the Mount Alexander Hotel. Dr. Barr was sent for, and properly attended, and after examining the patient ordered his removal to the Hospital. Since his admission, he has had a succession of fits, and very little hope is entertained of his recovery. Where Colin and Kitty were living between 1874 - when Colin went bankrupt - and 1887 is unknown. The only clue is that their youngest daughter Martha was registered in the Amherst district in 1877 Anyway here is the bare bones of Kitty's life.
