    3. Hello Denis, We are so lucky in this country, to have very informative death certificates. Unlike the UK, the place of burial is listed, along with the name of the undertaker, and, much much more! I am afraid you will have to purchase a death cert. to get this information. Of course you will have also have to have some idea of when she died. If you have already searched BMD and unable to find a death under 'Knight' then she may indeed, have changed her name. Then, I am afraid, the search is endless..............but you always live in hope. Good luck! Judy...........Perth. W.A. We upload the works in djvu format to Commons, and our proofreading tool at Wikisource can grab the text layer and we can proofread the OCR'd text side by side against the image page by page. We then transclude all the pages to our main namespace to display a text. For Wikisource, anyone who has a Wikipedia login, can login and proofread the text, and whether you do one page or fifty (or more for those dedicated committed people <grin>). I am slowly working through http://en.wikisource.org/wiki/Index:The_Dictionary_of_Australasian_Biography.djvu and http://en.wikisource.org/wiki/Index:A_colonial_autocracy,_New_South_Wales_under_Governor_Macquarie,_1810-1821.djvu plus 63 volumes of the Dictionary of National Biography and ... ;-) Plus always open for suggestions of other works of interest that people find at archive.org or google books. 2. Andrew Billinghurst
    3. Hi to all, After a little hiatus, I have completed the transcription and tidying of the 1856 work by Capt. Henry Butler Stoney ... VICTORIA: WITH A DESCRIPTION OF ITS PRINCIPAL CITIES, MELBOURNE AND GEELONG: AND REMAKES ON THE PRESENT STATE OF THE COLONY; INCLUDING AN ACCOUNT OF THE BALLAARAT DISTURBANCES, AND OF THE DEATH OF CAPTAIN WISE, 40TH REGIMENT. http://en.wikisource.org/wiki/Victoria:_with_a_description_of_its_principal_cities,_Melbourne_and_Geelong Contents Introductory Chapter, Page. 1 CHAPTER I. Melbourne and its Environs in 1855, 16 CHAPTER II. Victoria in 1855, 35 CHAPTER III. Routes to Ballaarat, 71 CHAPTER IV. The Gold Fields, 90 CHAPTER V. The Ballaarat Disturbances, and their Cause, 101 CHAPTER VI. The Emeute, 113 CHAPTER VII. Character and Death of Captain Wise, 129 CHAPTER VIII. General State of the Colony in 1856, 139 Appendix, 185 Stoney writes:— THOUGH many works, and some of considerable repute, have appeared before the public, relating to Victoria, there still remains such a vast field for further exertion, abounding in information interesting and instructive, and fraught with incidents deep and perilous, that it cannot be said the subject is too hackneyed, or ourselves accused of following a beaten track. The principal object we have in view is to do honour to the memory of a friend, one much beloved, and who gloriously fell whilst gallantly and honourably leading his men on to that victory, which, however inglorious, was at his country's commands, and in obedience to the voice of duty. Our second object is, to give a correct account of Victoria at the period alluded to, interspersed with adventurous anecdotes which have come under our own immediate notice, or derived from reliable sources. We arrogate to ourselves no style beyond the "plain unvarnished tale," in which we have hitherto appeared before the public; yet, the politician may gather facts from our narrative suggestive of thoughts, at least worthy of reflection; the future emigrant may derive hints for his guidance; the settler will find a record of the first great convulsive throe which disturbed the harmony of Australia's progress; the memory of the tourist will become refreshed with the place of action of many a spirit-stirring scene; and the fireside reader, in the perusal of our pages, will feel a pleasing animation as we depict the unquestionably picturesque beauties of many of our rambles, or from the recital of anecdotes thrilling with interest, yet of such frequent occurrence in our Antipodean possessions ... ---- Stoney was of the regiment that was involved in the Eureka Stockade and it involves a rendition from the side of the combatants, though from one not involved. It has a very eclectic Appendix. Seems to be things that he had collected and thought relevant to put into a put for sale in the old country. There are surely still some typos in the work, feel free to correct them or get back to me with chapter and page. Enjoy. 3. If you put Maryborough and Dunolly Advertiser in the search field in the newspapers online in Trove you will find thousands of extracts/news items from the paper which were obviously syndicated to other papers, in particular the Argus. If anyone has a particular interest in the area there is heaps to do in editing the OCR scans and making them readable for other generations. It is easy to register and log in thereafter is simple. http://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/result?q=Maryborough+and+Dunolly+Advertiser My interest is the /Camperdown Chronicle/ and I find it fascinating, addictive and rewarding to edit/fix while learning about the past in my home town. I use my maiden name as my search and have unearthed heaps of family information. Susan ----- Elizabeth recommended to try TROVE - as she believed the Maryborough and Dunolly Advertiser newspaper records are there. I have checked, they are not there ( http://www.nla.gov.au/ndp/selected_newspapers/ ) and unfortunately not on the candidate list for digitization. I have contacted Trove with the suggestion that MADA be included as a candidate for digitisation. For Victoria the coverage we rely on is The Argus - and certainly it should be the primary title and has a lot of country news. Otherwise there is not much for Victoria considering the plethora of titles: - Argus* 1846 – 1954 - Illustrated Australian News 1867 – 1896 - Camperdown Chronicle [contributed title] 1877 - 1954 - Portland Guardian* [contributed title] 1842 - 1953 - Gippsland Times [contributed title] 1861 - 1954 - The Australasian Sketcher with Pen and Pencil 1873 – 1889 I would still recommend Trove as it is surprising where you find goldfields mentions - articles on the Lamplough rushes are in the Maitland Mercury (NSW) for example. I haven't found anything useful for Sarah Tacey and Amherst on Trove though :-( Regards Anne ------------------------------- To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to AUS-VIC-GOLDFIELDS-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message

    3. Elizabeth recommended to try TROVE - as she believed the Maryborough and Dunolly Advertiser newspaper records are there. I have checked, they are not there ( http://www.nla.gov.au/ndp/selected_newspapers/ ) and unfortunately not on the candidate list for digitization. I have contacted Trove with the suggestion that MADA be included as a candidate for digitisation. 3. Hello list, I would like to thank you for the positive response to my enquiry. Not only did we get the information, sidestepping some incorrect spelling along the way but I now have pictures of a family tombstone. My thanks and appreciation............Mike Berriman.
