Hi Everyone, I thought i had a pretty good list of town and locality names for Wellington Shire, but have just come up with two (actually three) more. As part of what I am sorting for Maffra Library/Historical Society I have come up on a set of old maps (more to come next week, so won't tell the full story now). One map in the 1908 Closer Settlement advertisement for The Heart, near Sale. It also shows land at Cobains and "Fosterton". The Fosterton would probably be an attempt to record the Foster association with The Heart run, but isn't one I have struck before. I don't know if it had any local currency or use, or was just something Closer Settlement invented to distinguish the seven properties there. The other one is I was looking at a 1926 Parish of Yeerung, and realised they had named Munro as Lowngerut. I had never heard that one, but went to David Luxford's "Sap in their Veins", and there is was. The railway station at Munro started as Yeerung, but was changed to Munro by 1888. However the town appears to have been originally named Towngerut, and was changed in the Government Gazette of 1926 to Lowngerut - did someone notice the mistake as they were re-drawing the 1926 Yeerung Map????? The town did not officially become Munro until 1952. I am told there is no mention of Towngerut/Lowngerut in "Vision and Realisation" (the schools histories), but must find out about the Post Office. Anyone got any others I am missing????? The full list is at: http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~surreal/AVG/Resources/Res-ws.html Cheers Linda -- No virus found in this outgoing message. Bowen became Port Franklin in early 1900s.
