Hi list, from recently acquired birth and death certificates, I have learned that my grandparents lived in Korumburra around 1893/1894. They had previously lived in Melbourne (1892) and returned to New Zealand later in 1894. My grandfather (Arthur DYETT) is listed as a 'Miner' and the family shows on the death cert of a daughter as living in Mine Road, Korumburra. The birth cert shows Louisa May DYETT was born in Korumburra 6 May 1893. The attending Dr was Dr T J...? or I...? (a short surname) and the nurse as Mrs DOWELL. Louisa died in January 1894 in Melbourne aged 8 months. Some questions regarding Korumburra. Who would have Arthur DYETT have worked for as a miner? Was the housing in Mine Road 'company' provided? Are there accessible repositories of photos for Korumburra during this era? Are there registers of Mine employees? All comments appreciated. regards Bruce Holm Christchurch, NZ
Hi Bruce and list You could try the following: 1) BOWDEN, Keith - "Early Days of Korumburra", Sentinel-Times, 1979 - lots of pictures, but no mention of Dyett in index. 2) GARDNER, Peter D - "A Gippsland Union: the Victorian Coal Miners Association 1893-1915", Ngarak Press, P O Box 18, Ensay VIC 3895, ISBN 1 875254 33 1, 2003 - more pictures, still no mention of Dyett. Peter Gardner has an index of SOME coal miners from the Gippsland field, so you should try to contact him. He also has other publications that might be of interest to you. Hope that helps.
