Hello Listers, Having had an injection in my right arm, I at last can get into my old notes and lift folders out of cupboards and books out of shelves! So here is something that I found in my folder on research of land registers at the Victorian Public Record Office (dozens of series numbers & titles) in preparation for a lands seminar possibly in 1992. I was checking on the sort of information in the volumes in case I had a query which they would answer, etc. Soooooooooooo....... VPRS 1310 Land Act 1862. Register of Licences Land Act 1862 (1862-1865) total 3 volumes. Volume 1: Index at front unused. Entries are by "Registry No". One page per person, leases paid 3-monthly, some transferred to "Licence" then "Grant", some purchased. They seem to come through the Bairnsdale Licencing Board, because there is a memo dated 11 Sept 1868, to the Licencing Officer at Bairnsdale concerning a Mr DOWELL, licensee for a wharf reduced from £16 to £10 and indicating that a Mr WILMOTT was also able to renew at the lower rate. Here are some examples of the contents: Licences for Fishing huts February 1864 (no exact sites listed) John PERCY, Ah Chong, John LAVOISSEN, James SMITH (purchased 1867), Roland FLORANCE, John KELLY, Arch McALPINE, G.W.GRANT. Allan BURN of Punt Flat Bairnsdale: licence for a rural inn in 1868 John FITZGERALD of Punt Flat Bairnsdale: licence for a smithy (in July 1871left the district) Gustav SCHNEIDER of Tambo: licence for a sawmill Sept 1864 George GRANT of Shaving Point: licence for Fisherman's hut (and purchased) John NAVAS of Shaving Point: licence for fisherman's hut COULSEN & SHAW of Shaving Point: licence for fisherman's hut (purchased 1871} W.ROADKNIGHT of Lakes Entrance: licence for fisherman's hut 1870 W.MONTGOMERY of Lakes Entrance: licence for fisherman's hut 1871 John HOWLETT of Sand Hummocks Lakes Entrance licence for a rural inn in Nov 1871 but "never paid up". There are only 43 pages used Volume 2 has only two pages used and the licensees are listed one under the other. I only drew off the first three entries as an indication of the contents.
