Eric, Your information about the burials at Yarra Bend is an eye-opener for me and probably also for other listers.. The accounts that I have read give the impression that the LA site did not extend beyond the site of the golf course car park. I once made a cursory study of YBLA which showed that some patients were admitted at the request of their relatives who contributed towards their upkeep. When such a patient died the relatives were notified and they made arrangements for the burial at a cemetery of their choice. Other patients were transferred to Yarra Bend from one of the Melbourne gaols. They had been initially abandoned by their relatives, picked up by the police and certified as "dangerous lunatics." When one of those patients died, the Northcote police sometimes arranged for the burial in a (very deep) pauper's grave at Melbourne General Cemetery, Carlton. Walter
