Good morning all, I am interested to hear from anyone who has a death in Stratford pre 1865. Now for the puzzling bit which I hope someone can help me with. I have searched the Stratford inquests pre 1869 and there are about 24 listed. When I cross check these against the BDMs I can't find any of them! Nor can I locate ANY deaths in Stratford in the VIC BDMs pre 1880s. I have tried looking under neighbouring places (e.g. Sale, Bairnsdale, etc, even Gipps Land, etc) but ditto, there are virtually no deaths listed pre 1880s!! Can anyone please tell me what I'm doing wrong here?? Kind regards - Anne
Hi Anne, Deaths prior to about 1877 are shown on the Pioneer Index with place of BIRTH, not place of death. The place of death? was of course recorded, but only the place of birth shows on the index. I checked 3 inquests (Cuddihy, Barleycorn & Croft) that were recorded as having taken place at Stratford and their deaths are all registered. Remember also, that Stratford may have been where the inquest was held and not necessarily the place of death. Dear Anne, I have been researching Lett and MacDonald of Stratford/Nuntin. William Lett died at his property 'Williamsvale' in 1862, Marion McDonald died at Nuntin in 13th August 1862. this info came from Vic BDM. I am sure that others of the family died at Stratford. The information I have given you I have on card file system but not on computer. I had purchased the family BDM certificates and had compiled quite a bit of info about Stratford and the family but as of this week am pretty much starting from scratch [devastating] after loss of hard drive and discovery that most of my backed up files were corrupted. There is a lesson in this I am sure but just at the moment I am too shocked to figure it and just feel the loss. Needless to say if you have any information on the Lett/ Macdonald / Manning families of Gippsland or on Gippsland history I would very much appreciate any you can pass on.
