Hello Ada & Linda These AMEYs from Morwell and Newry are also in our family tree and are generally from around the Hampshire and Dorset areas - definitely not China! For the record, the John AMEY who died Jun 1894 in Morwell (and is buried at the Hazelwood Cemetery) was born 15 Mar 1811 in Dorset and was transported to Van Diemen's Land in 1838 for the crime of highway robbery. "At the age of 26 years he was caught poaching and served three weeks in prison with a fine of fourteen shillings for his efforts. This was followed by a much more serious offence, which resulted in him being charged at Burley, near Ringwood, of assault and robbery. The following details have been extracted from the calendar of prisoners at Dorset Quarter Sessions in January 1838. [The notation 'IMP' means 'reads and writes imperfectly.] The figures in the left hand column refers to the witnesses' expenses paid to them by the court. the [19] refers to the charge No. in the journal and the [26] is the prisoner's age. CHARGE: JOHN AMEY [19] [26] L2 - 4 8 Committed by Rev. John Hampden, charged on the oath of Henry Pike, of Longham, in the parish of Hamperston, carpenter, and others, with having on the 20th day of November, feloniously stolen a carving knife, of the value of two shillings, the property of Elizabeth Pryer, widow. Warrant dated 22nd November, 1837. IMP L10 - 11 - 8" His death certificate states the following: District of Morwell in the Colony of Victoria Where and when Died - Morwell, Shire of Morwell -- 2nd June 1894. Name and Surname, Rank or profession -- John Amey - Gentleman. Age 83 years. His brothers Charles and Harry (Henry) settled in the Sale and Newry districts respectively. Their father, also a John AMEY, arrived in NSW in 1838 then at Port Albert abt 1850 and is buried in the Alberton Cemetery (Jun 1866). Other family members lived in South Gippsland, hence the naming of Amey's Track. I cannot think where they are from in England, but they are definitely not Chinese.
