    3. Hi Anne, Some years ago on one of the Victorian lists this conundrum came up about deaths which had occurred and an inquest had been held by the coroner. >From memory unless the coroner specifically advised the BDM's on the completion of the inquest no record was recorded in the BDM's and I think that people were advised to look in the local papers of the area to ascertain details of the deaths as the inquests were usually well covered by the local press.- Sorry that I can not be of any more help. I think the cases were in the Ballarat area and would have been pre 1865ish. Kind regards, Laurie Marlin, Bairnsdale ---- Original Message ----- From: "Anne Napier" <napier@vic.australis.com.au> To: <aus-vic-gippsland@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, November 16, 2007 10:04 AM Subject: [AVG] Deaths at Stratford > > Good morning all, > > I am interested to hear from anyone who has a death in Stratford pre 1865. > > Now for the puzzling bit which I hope someone can help me with. 3. Anne and Laurie, In my Dodemaide family 2 children burnt to death were not registered - possibly because their bodies weren't recognizable. In the case of drowning I believe they are not registered if the body is not found. ...about deaths which had occurred and an inquest had been held by the coroner. >>From memory unless the coroner specifically advised the BDM's on the >>completion of the inquest no record was recorded in the BDM's and I think >>that people were advised to look in the local papers of the area to > ascertain details of the deaths as the inquests were usually well covered > by the local press...

    3. Unfortunately all did not go well from an inquest: some coroners simply filled in "unknown" for most of the columns, arguing that it was the job of the police to sort this out, not theirs. Or, as at Ballarat, the deputy registrar had trouble even reading the scrawl of Dr Glindinning, and, whilst doing his best to interpret the name, and filling out a death certificate, appears to have alerted the families, who put in their own info and name ... often nothing like the interpretation the registrar had put on the Dr's handwriting. This in the mid 1850s And I have found a death certificate as late as 1953 in with the inquest papers, and not registered with BDMs. So caution with all records, making comparisons with originals, and allowance for arrogance and carelessnes. One should always check police gazettes, sometimes bodies are "unknown" (and listed as such in the inquest) and sometimes, after the initial report, an issue or so later, the deceased is identified.
