    3. Ann Mason and Greg, My grandfather George Glen Auchterlonie, who resided at Tinamba in about 1870, used to transport goods by bullock wagon to and from Clydebank. Several years ago I was informed by Linda and/or others that ships used to berth at Clydebank (on the Avon River at Thomson's selection near Stratford) when the natural entrance to the Gippsland Lakes was clear of sandbars. Grandfather's diary shows: [1870] "December 30th - Yoked up & went over to old Joe's. Got started by about 9 o c'clock, had dinner near Reeds shanty. Drove on & camped at Power's dam,. Made enquiries at Maffra for retrurn loading but could get none. Took doown two small cases to Clyde Bank from Campbell. Dec 1st - Yoked up early & went by [blank]. Believe the way to be about 4 miles longer, but at present much better road. Camped for dinner about 5 miles from Clyde B, got there about four o'clock, unloaded & came back about one mile & camped. The steamer had not arrived but the Maryanne schooner had just come in. Met Mr Limschow her captain near Robbs corner . . . Dec 2nd - Yoked up, got to Maffra between two & three & got home about 7, being a day's journey of about 25 miles." ......................................................................................................... I should add that in the early 1930s I knew (and liked) Geoff Robb (nicknamed "Chinny") who came from Clydebank. We were boarders at the Anglican boys hostel at Raymond Street, Sale.
