May 18: Angus McMillan dies. Coach Road from Melbourne to Sale completed, with first bridges on Latrobe and Moe Rivers. The journey takes from 24 to 36 hours. Sep: Coach service from Sale to Melbourne instituted by Hewitt and Co., and taken over a short time later by Cobb and Co. Oct 10: Avon Shire proclaimed, the second shire in Gippsland. Ten new hotels built in Sale, bringing total to 15. Rev John Roberts arrives to assist Login after many short term assistants. Reef gold discovered at Dargo. 1866 Mar 2: The ketch Surprise leaves the Lakes for Melbourne and is lost at sea. May 17: The barque Ellen Simpson goes down off Cape Howe with the loss of nine lives. Jul 18: Meeting at Bairnsdale in a second attempt to have the area declared a Roads Board. Section 42 of Land Act comes into force allowing the lease of up to four twenty acre blocks within ten miles of a goldfield. A.W. Howitt appointed to Bairnsdale as magistrate. Reef gold discovered at Black Springs Gum Forest. Reefs discovered on Upper Bendoc River. By 1867 the Morning Star and Come Love reefs being worked. About 240 diggers on Bendoc and Delegate Rivers. A need arises to clarify if the Bendoc mines were in Victoria or NSW. 1867 Jan: Howitt visits diggings around Bendoc. Apr 30: Bairnsdale declared a Roads District. Aug 20: Gippsland Hospital opened at Sale. Gippsland Guardian newspaper moves to Rosedale C.J. Tyers retires from public service. Henry Goodridge builds a hotel at Russell's Creek 1868 Feb 24: Cranbourne Roads District declared a Shire. May 14: Poet and author Mary Fullerton born at Glenmaggie. Jun: Howitt re-visits Bendoc goldfields. Jul 18: First shire meeting at Bairnsdale. Nehemiah Guthridge, businessmen and Mayor of Sale, begins promotion for his new shipping company. Hamilton Reed and John Locke take up grazing lease at Goongerah. First contract let for construction of the artificial entrance to the Lakes. First hops grown in East Gippsland. Alluvial gold discovered at Clifton Creek and Freestone Creek. 1869 (DROUGHT ON THE MONARO) May 19: First meeting of the Rosedale Roads Board held in the Police Station. Aug: Poet Marie Pitt born at Bullumwaal. Alexander Black defines nearest tributary of the Murray, as part of the process of defining the Victorian/NSW border. The Grant Act (Amendment) allows selection before survey. To take effect 1.2.1870.
