June 26 - Lt-Gen Sir Stanley Savige (who served in two world wars and was a founder of Legacy), is born in Morwell to parents Samuel and Ann Savige. unk: Light established at Cape Everard. unk: First bridge (suspension) across the Snowy River at Orbost. unk: Sion sisters arrive in Sale. unk: The Fire Brigades Act establishes Metropolitan and nine country fire brigades. unk: Reef gold discovered at Mount Wills and Sunnyside. 1891 May 29 - Poowong & Jeetho Shire is created by severance of the southern part of Buln Buln Shire. Dec 9 - Warragul Shire is created by severance of part of Buln Buln Shire. unk: First selection at Glen Arte. unk: New Mechanics' Institute built in Sale. unk: Extensive floods. unk - Collapse of the land boom and beginning of financial depression. unk - Survey of the new "railway" townships of Korumburra and Leongatha by John Lardner. 1892 Jan 13 - Railway line from Dandenong to Port Albert is opened, with many stations, including Tooradin, Kooweerup, Lang Lang, Loch, Korumburra, Leongatha, Meeniyan, Fish Creek, Foster, Toora, and Welshpool. Mar 16 - Railway line is opened from Warragul to Neerim South. May 22 - Morwell Shire is created by severance of parts of Traralgon and Narracan Shires. May 30: Shire of Croajingolong is formed, with the name being changed to Shire of Orbost on 17 February 1893. Oct: The first truckload of black coal is shipped from Korumburra to Melbourne South Gippsland railway opened. Nov 11 - The Outtrim Coal Company is formed. unk: Work commenced on the Sion convent at Sale. unk: Orbost butter factory begins operation. unk: Rich gold finds at Coolgardie (WA) attract large numbers of people from Victoria. unk: A cheese factory began production at Woodleigh, South Gippsland. unk: The Morwell, Narracan and Mirboo Pastoral and Agricultural Society founders due to financial difficulties and ceases operations. unk: Seventy co-operative village settlements are established in West Gippsland by the Government in order to assist the unemployed. Some people are settled on farms while others are employed on the task of draining the Moe and Kooweerup Swamps. 1893 Apr: Drainage of Moe Swamp is declared to have been completed, but joy was short-lived. Both swamps are flooded later in the year and it is necessary to carry out further work. Dec 28: The steamer Alert sinks in a storm off Cape Schank with the loss of 15 lives. unk: Reef gold discovered at Marthavale. unk: Widespread unemployment, bank failures and debt moratorium. unk: Village settlement schemes, leading to settlements at Eagle Point and Calulu. unk: Drainage of Moe swamp completed. unk: Glenaladale weir construction. unk: Extremely high flood at Orbost. 1894 Feb 16: South Gippsland Shire is created by severance of part of Alberton Shire. Apr 13: Mirboo Shire is created by severance of parts of Narracan and Woorayl Shires. unk: Heavy rains in West Gippsland cause extensive flooding of the Moe Swamp and drainage work continues unk: Reef gold discovered at Mallacoota. unk: First briquetting plant destroyed by fire.
