Thanks for your input Lesley and Linda. I know the Shingles were brickmakers in Maffra. James and Mary Ann Shingles (nee Price) married in 1853 and lived in the Brunswick area of Melbourne before settling in Gippsland in the late 1860s - first Sale, I think. They were in Maffra by about 1874. My interest is really confined to a single and more recent branch of the family - that of Herbert James SHINGLES (1889-1915) and Grace Celia HEWAT. They married in 1911 and two children - Nina May (1911) and Keith Herbert (1913-1939) - were born in Maffra. I don't know whether they remained in Gippsland, though ........ Grace married William GILES (also from Maffra, I think) in 1918 and was living in North Fitzroy when she gave birth to Marjory (1917) and Doris (1918). If there are any SHINGLES researchers out there, I'd be very interested to learn about the circumstances surrounding Herbert Shingles' early death in 1915.
