Reef gold discovered at Club Terrace and Brookville. 1896 Feb: Maffra Sugarbeet Company Bill passes final stages in Parliament. Sep 23: The Bogong goes down near the mouth of the Snowy River with the loss of five crew members. unk: Arrival of rabbits in Gippsland. unk: Teredo worm damage to lake entrance becomes obvious. unk: Second briquetting plant built, but later wound up. unk: A new bridge is built over the Latrobe River south of Willowgrove. 1897 Jan 12: The barque County Antrim sinks off Lakes Entrance without loss of life. unk: Destruction of entrance during storms begins. unk: First sighting of a rabbit at Morwell. 1898 January 1898 Bushfire swept through Gippsland and the Otway Ranges destroying townships and killing settlers and their stock. Feb 'Black Friday' bushfire, one of a series this year that devastates Gippsland.
