Jan: Gaffney's Creek goldfield discovered. Jun 19: Roads Board formed at Cranbourne. Jul: Hawthorn and Icy Creek goldfields discovered on Baw Baw. Nov: McMillan resigns from Legislative Assembly. unk: Dr Hedley elected to Victorian Parliament. unk: Mueller by boat to Twofold Bay and explores Cape Howe, Mallacoota, and Genoa River areas. Finds and names Gippsland Waratah on Nungatta Mountain. unk: Population of Omeo reaches 500. unk: Bennison runs stock on Bennison Plains. unk: J.H. Petit surveys a road from Bairnsdale to Stratford. unk: Alfred William Howitt leads a prospecting party to Crooked River, discovering alluvial gold there. A second party, led by C.W. Nicholson explores the Tambo and Snowy Valleys. Late: Gold discovered at Grant. unk: Reverend Bulmer in Gippsland to establish a reserve for Aborigines. unk: Bairnsdale town surveyed and laid out (north side of Main St). unk: Nicholson Act sets aside 1.6m ha Crown Land for selection in Victoria. This is the first selection act for Victoria and operates Nov 1860 to June 1862. 1861 Jan: G.T. Jones photographing diggers at Lucknow - possibly Gippsland's first residential photographer. Feb: Drought and fires Bushy Park and everywhere else. McMillan in financial difficulties and ultimately looses all stations except Cuigmungie. Mar 30: McMillan marries Christina Naughton. Apr 18: The barque Rembrandt sinks off the Ninety Mile Beach with the loss of ten lives. Jun 26: Howitt leaves Melbourne with a party to go in search of Burke and Wills. He locates the only survivor, and buries those who died. He then returns to Central Australia to bring their remains to Melbourne. Jun: Rev Bulmer selects site for Aboriginal Mission at Buchan and begins establishment. This was unsuccessful, and by the end of the year he had chosen an alternative site at Lake Tyers. Jul 11: The schooner Macclesfield sinks on the Clonmel Sands at Port Albert with the loss of five lives. unk: Victoria's population reaches 539,000 unk: American Civil war begins. unk: Nicholson party discovers gold at Pinch Creek near Bonang, and alluvial gold near Bendoc, and some in the lower Snowy. unk: Gold discovered at Wood's Point and alluvial gold at Barmouth Creek, Wombat Creek and in the Jordan. unk: Gold rush at Crooked River. unk: First coach from Sale to Bairnsdale. unk: Gippsland Times news commenced at Sale by George Gellately.
