    3. Hi Barry, Linda and Listers This run was first taken up pre February 1851 by the Imlay Brothers from NSW - it was huge and stretched from the Snowy River east to the Bemm River and south to the coast. They called it Snowy River Station. The Imlays didn't stay long because the original inhabitants strongly objected to their presence. The next 'owners' were the McLeod's (brothers Norman and John) and they named it Orbost. After they had financial difficulties in the 1870's, the run was taken up by W J Clarke. He would have been the run owner at the time of your ancestors birth in 1882. It was known as Orbost Station - not to be confused with Stirlings 'Old Station' on the other side of the Snowy. There is plenty of info available about the McLeod's. The Station included some of the very rich Snowy River flats where maize, beans and numerous vegetables were grown as well as cattle grazing.. I don't know when the Jarrahmond part of the run was split into A and B sections. This may have been due to the Snowy constantly flooding and access to the whole property was impossible. 'A' Road led to the western side of the Station and 'B' Road came in it from where Orobst township would soon be. At this time there were very few people in the area and most of those would have been employed by Stirling on one side of the Snowy or by McLeod's on the other. McLeod's also had blocks on the other side of the Snowy. The Jarrahmond State School No 2745 was opened 13 March 1886 with Mr Walters as teacher. It was a half time school. Later John Rowe taught there half time and at Orbost State School the rest of the time. The first church service for the Bete Bolong community (immediately across the river from Jarrahmond) was held at the school. Mr Morton was a Presbyterian minister in Orbost from 1893 to 1903. He started classes for adult men at Jarrahmond school to help further their education. Orbost Station was subdivided and open to selectors - the first arriving in 1898. I'm sorry I can't be of more assistance. The Mitchell at Newmerella was J W Mitchell but he doesn't get a mention in any of my books - I presume Mitchell's Road at Newmerella was named after him. I cannot see any other Mitchells listed as early settlers. Did you ancestors have any more children? Perhaps certificates for further children will give some more info such as how long they stayed in this area. If your write to the Orbost Historical Society, I'm sure they will be able to help you with further info. Regards Lori
