Hi List, We were so successful with Nurse Cocking, that I am venturing to throw another name into the ring. On the Orbost shire WWI Honour Board it lists three Stapley sisters as WWI nurses. In his Gippsland Heritage Journal article on nurses, John Pearson listed only one, Viola Frances Stapley, and only because she gave her next of kin as being at Heyfield. It turns out the three sisters, Viola, Maggie Cressida and Elfrida Mary were all born at Bairnsdale/Lucknow, as were another brother and sister. The family moved to Orbost, where they were amongst the first students at the school, and their father was later a Tambo Shire councillor. By co-incidence, the town of Buch was almost called Stapley, as the father was the one who made the original prospecting discovery. But what happened to the family after Orbost??? Maggie Cressida Stapley, died Lilydale 1949 aged 70, or her sister Frederica Harrie Johnson nee Stapley, died Lilydale 1945 aged 73. Of the other two nursing sisters, Viola Frances Stapley died Heidelberg 1967 aged 93, Elfrida Mary Stapley died Heidelberg 1971 aged 91, possibly at the Repatriation Hospital. Does anyone know anything about them, or who the next of kin may have been at Heyfield???
