    3. Lee, to quote from "Lonely graves of the Gippsland Goldfields and Greater Gippsland" by J.G.Rogers & Nelly Helyar: "Kitty Cane was a supposed dance hall girl, having arrived in the district during the heyday of Wood's Point and surrounding goldfields. She was carted by packhorse to the district by Louie the Frenchman, for nine pence per pound...she weighed in at 22 stone. Kitty soon set up a wayside tavern along the side of the road near Aberfeldy...Her business venture survived for only a short time as Kitty died at her tavern of an unknown ailment. Local miners hearing of the stressful situation, arrived to give Kitty the great sendoff they thought she truely deserved. Several men intended to carry her to the Aberfeldy Cemetery, but most had imbibed too freely of her wines and they gave up the attempt. Kitty's great weight and their state of inebriation defeated them and they laid her body to rest a short distance from her shanty... her grave, clearly seen and signposted ...on the Walhalla side of Aberfeldy Later, the book explores the mystery behind Kitty Cain, asking the question whether Kitty Cain was actually Catherine Lowe who died at Aberfeldy in 1863 - Claire ===== Claire Wood Traralgon, Vic. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!?
