    1. [AVG] Sloyd Rooms
    2. Linda Barraclough
    3. Hi Everyone, In another forum of which I am a member, there is much discussion on Sloyd Rooms at schools, and there appear to have been few of these that survived. Sloyd was a form of manual work / woodwork that became important just before WWI, and your male ancestors at state or high school at that time would have been involved in it. Specially constructed Sloyd Rooms were built at schools, and so far only two have been identified in Gippsland - one at Leongatha High School and one at Briagolong State School. Both were built in 1914. Although not Gippsland, you can read a little bit about Sloyd at http://www.ballarat.edu.au/curator/honour-roll/honourroll_steane.shtml It is also something you may find older members of your family may mention when you are talking about their time at school. The question is - can anyone point to any other surviving Sloyd Rooms in Gippsland. I suspect I know where it was at Maffra High (the woodwork room behind the cookery room, in one wing of the original building. Doubt if it would be recognisable now). Does anyone know of any others???? Have any of your older family members mentioned it???? Regards Linda

    3. Hello List and Richard in particular, Not necessarily "off list" because I'm sure this craft subject was taught extensively in our school system. Richard, I was at Gardiner Central 1953-54 having come "up" from the primary school there. Like you, we girls went to Armadale for cookery and needlework; the boys for craftwork. "Sloyd" was a commonly used term around the school at the time. Regards, Rob in England

    3. Hi All, I am looking for some connection to a John Frawley who came from County Clare most likely, but maybe from Co. Limerick. Possibly came on "Lady Macdonald". Is there anybody there who claims some kinship to John? Regards, Rob

    3. Hello, everyone Over five years, I compiled the guide as a volunteer of Gippsland Regional Maritime Museum at Port Albert, mainly from resources held in the Museum's archives. Initially it was intended so our mostly-elderly volunteers could answer queries by the many casual visitors who have family connections to early Port Albert. The first copies were published with a grant from the Alberton Project; reprints are financed through sales of the books. Copies of the 754-page two-volume set can be obtained through the Museum, any profit going to museum operation. Because Port Albert was the main gateway to Gippsland until road, rail and lakes entrance access was available, many of the 15,000+ people featured in the publication settled elsewhere in the region, but used the Port for trade and travel. For example, Rosedale is mentioned nearly 400 times in the set and there is a great deal of information about Tasmania, crews of ships on the coastal trade and even New Zealand. It is a big work and will provide you with years of bedtime reading! 3. Re Rosedale: I am having a mental blank day, so the only Rosedale resident I can think of is James RINTOUL. He has a middling-sized entry. Gwen has just given me permission to post a page on the net, which I will do later today, to give a better idea of the sort of content in the book. If you have a surname between GIBSON and GILL, hang in there by the fingernails and you never know your luck. 1. [AVG] [Admin] Cost of Books
    2. Linda Barraclough
    3. Hi Everyone, Regarding the cost of books - you may have noticed that Naomi and I were a little careful with our wording - as Rootsweb requests that we do not indulge in commercial activity on lists. Which is why both posts included details for an e-mail address for further enquiries. Enquiries as to cost / availability etc need to be directed to those e-mail addresses, offlist. I am more than happy to see not-for-profit organisations posting one-off notifications about their new publications on that basis. It is what the list is all about. Commercial publishers are welcome to contact me offlist and I am happy to try and work out a post that hopefully fits Rootsweb guidelines. It is possible I might even sail close to the wind and point to commercial websites - which is a bit of a Rootsweb no-no. But I would prefer those posts came from me rather than commercial operators feel that it is okay to post direct to list. It isn't. (Long-term members will be aware I am a commercial publisher. So I know how the other half lives, too). Cheers Linda List-admin AUS-VIC-GIPPSLAND

    3. I also agree, I have alot of interest in the Gippsland area, and it would be great to be able to purchase a copy of the new book, It also would have been better for you to know the cost of the book or even given some idea of cost, when you put this to the list. My daughter lives in Sale; if the book is a reasonable price, I’m sure she would buy a copy for me, save’s postage and handing.. 3. I agree with the sentiments about lookups. But can anyone tell me if Rosedale pioneers are included in the book?
