Truly amazed at the tremendous amount of work that has gone into this production. Judy Hirst and the rest of the gang deserve the highest praise for what they've turned out. the older of the tworobbos

    3. Hi Everyone, Rootsweb is on a go-slow after a spam attack. I THINK what is happening now, as they go into recovery, is that the most recent messages are coming out first. So if you have something in there, and are wondering what has happened - give it a little longer. This one below I am sending again now, though, as it is for a function that it later today, Saturday. There is still time for you to get your glad rags on and get down there. Looks like it will be a good day - and I am only sorry I cannot be there. Cheers Linda ...................................................... Hi Everyone, Just a reminder that the Sale and District Pioneer Register is being launched tomorrow - everyone welcome, I gather. Details are in the original post are at http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/read/AUS-VIC-GIPPSLAND/2007-10/1191962677 and there is an e-mail address in that to contact. I have just sighted a copy, and it is rather good. It is 483 pages, A4, spiral bound (metal spiral). It seems to be mainly based on full transcripts of all births, deaths and marriages in the Gippsland Guardian, Gippsland Mercury and Gippsland Times to 1900, but with added contributions and added research from all sorts of places. Some entries have photographs. Those births deaths and marriages are good, as often they include an address, property name etc. Included is a facsimile of the autograph book from the Inaugural gathering of the Sale and District Pioneer Gathering in 1913. This has been fully subscribed and often gives details of the signatory's arrival in Gippsland. That takes up 11 pages. The map showing the area covered goes from Rosedale and Heyfield through to Delvin and Roseneath, and north as far as Bushy Park (Briagolong). It goes only as far south as Dutson and Glencoe. Cheers Linda

    3. I should have explained before. Hoddle was the railway station between Foster and Fish Creek. There was also a school at one time but long since closed. Hoddle Road is the connecting route from Fish Creek to Foster. I've NEVER been to Binginwarri and I'm not locally born either. Cheers Shirley

    3. Linda is correct if she is remembering that the sloyd and needlework rooms at Maffra High School (now Secondary College) were situated at the left hand side (facing from the street) of the original 1920s building. They were later to form the Home Economics area and eventually incorporated into the "new" library in the 1990s. It's worth noting that just for once the Education Department did not bulldoze everything and start again but rather extended the original building to nearly double its size in an archicturally sympathetic way. In fact it's so well done that you can only tell where the join is by looking at the roof - it wasn't possible to find tiles of exactly the same colour. Jeremy Hales

    3. Hello Linda Toora SS2253 had a Sloyd Room. Woodwork in the Sloyd Room was a favourite time for me while I was in Grades 7 & 8 at Toora. I left there in 1946 ). >From Vision and Realisation : "Sloyd centre equipment was transfered from SS2779 Strzelecki to Toora, in 1915, but was more of an embarrassment than an asset, until a proper Sloyd room was added to the school". Tom Martin. ----- Original Message ----- From: Linda Barraclough To: AUS-VIC-GIPPSLAND@rootsweb.com Sent: Saturday, October 20, 2007 6:55 PM Subject: [AVG] Sloyd Rooms Hi Everyone, In another forum of which I am a member, there is much discussion on Sloyd Rooms at schools, and there appear to have been few of these that survived. Sloyd was a form of manual work / woodwork that became important just before WWI, and your male ancestors at state or high school at that time would have been involved in it. Specially constructed Sloyd Rooms were built at schools, and so far only two have been identified in Gippsland - one at Leongatha High School and one at Briagolong State School. Both were built in 1914. Although not Gippsland, you can read a little bit about Sloyd at http://www.ballarat.edu.au/curator/honour-roll/honourroll_steane.shtml It is also something you may find older members of your family may mention when you are talking about their time at school. The question is - can anyone point to any other surviving Sloyd Rooms in Gippsland. I suspect I know where it was at Maffra High (the woodwork room behind the cookery room, in one wing of the original building. Doubt if it would be recognisable now). Does anyone know of any others???? Have any of your older family members mentioned it???? 3. Further to my previous post, I became curious about the origins of "Sloyd" For those who want to know more, the trusty old Wikipedi has some information: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sloyd. Sorry for the deviation from Gippsland, but I thought it might give some background and prompt some new connections. 3. For what it is worth: When I was a year 7 student at Gardiner Central School (Malvern) in 1961, I attended Sloyd classes at Armadale Primary School (my previous primary school) where there was a Sloyd room which was mainly used by outside secondary schools ( I do not recall any Armadale Primary students using it). As one not yet entitled to a senior's card, I can assure that it is not only the "old" people who can recall the joys of sloyd.
