Hi everyone Is there anyone who has a listing of burials at the Foster Cemetery, that would be willing to do a lookup please. I am after the death of a Ellen Louise (Nellie) MILLER. Her husband George Leslie MILLER died 2 May 1983 and has a headstone, but don't know if his wife has died yet. Thanks Joy Light
Thanks to all who replied to my query on AMEY of Morwell North. The date of death is that supplied by his executor, when applying for probate for his will., seems the date of death varied, since it was reported on 30 May, and probate says 2 June. If anyone has a particular interest, I will call back the file, to see why his will was rejected (or whatever reason it was) ... could be deaths of executors or that he had sold any land he mentioned in his will ...or.... Just let me know, I'll add the box to those I am indexing and report if requested. I've indexed 1851-1959, but only half-way through the series. I'm calling a halt at 1960 and will do a printout, then continue at my leisure through to 1988, the last entries. My purpose has been to index, with occasional full reading of a file (particularly if it included court proceedings), but, reaching "modern" times, the job is not so urgent, I feel, since families likely have full memory of the reasons for rejection by the Probate Court. Should be completed sometime about mid 2008, I think. Regards Ada Ada Ackerly. Hello Ada & Linda These AMEYs from Morwell and Newry are also in our family tree and are generally from around the Hampshire and Dorset areas - definitely not China! For the record, the John AMEY who died Jun 1894 in Morwell (and is buried at the Hazelwood Cemetery) was born 15 Mar 1811 in Dorset and was transported to Van Diemen's Land in 1838 for the crime of highway robbery. "At the age of 26 years he was caught poaching and served three weeks in prison with a fine of fourteen shillings for his efforts. This was followed by a much more serious offence, which resulted in him being charged at Burley, near Ringwood, of assault and robbery. The following details have been extracted from the calendar of prisoners at Dorset Quarter Sessions in January 1838. [The notation 'IMP' means 'reads and writes imperfectly.] The figures in the left hand column refers to the witnesses' expenses paid to them by the court. the [19] refers to the charge No. in the journal and the [26] is the prisoner's age. CHARGE: JOHN AMEY [19] [26] L2 - 4 8 Committed by Rev. John Hampden, charged on the oath of Henry Pike, of Longham, in the parish of Hamperston, carpenter, and others, with having on the 20th day of November, feloniously stolen a carving knife, of the value of two shillings, the property of Elizabeth Pryer, widow. Warrant dated 22nd November, 1837. IMP L10 - 11 - 8" His death certificate states the following: District of Morwell in the Colony of Victoria Where and when Died - Morwell, Shire of Morwell -- 2nd June 1894. Name and Surname, Rank or profession -- John Amey - Gentleman. Age 83 years. His brothers Charles and Harry (Henry) settled in the Sale and Newry districts respectively. Their father, also a John AMEY, arrived in NSW in 1838 then at Port Albert abt 1850 and is buried in the Alberton Cemetery (Jun 1866). Other family members lived in South Gippsland, hence the naming of Amey's Track. Thankyou Linda for such a quick reply. I can eliminate him, then But I'll pass on the information to the list to be passed on to Flo Pearce, info taken from "Non-Issued Probates" VPRS 7933/P1 Unit 1 item 15, non-issued will & probate of John Keith AMEY, gentleman, of Morwell North, died 2 Jan 1894. Hi there listers, A query: Can anyone tell me if the AMEY family of Morwell (in 1894) had Chinese background or UK ? I'm drawing off those of Chinese background in the "Non-issued probates" to send to the Bendigo Chinese Museum for their database, to which I have contributed previously. Unfortunately all did not go well from an inquest: some coroners simply filled in "unknown" for most of the columns, arguing that it was the job of the police to sort this out, not theirs. Or, as at Ballarat, the deputy registrar had trouble even reading the scrawl of Dr Glindinning, and, whilst doing his best to interpret the name, and filling out a death certificate, appears to have alerted the families, who put in their own info and name ... often nothing like the interpretation the registrar had put on the Dr's handwriting. This in the mid 1850s And I have found a death certificate as late as 1953 in with the inquest papers, and not registered with BDMs. So caution with all records, making comparisons with originals, and allowance for arrogance and carelessnes. One should always check police gazettes, sometimes bodies are "unknown" (and listed as such in the inquest) and sometimes, after the initial report, an issue or so later, the deceased is identified. Anne and Laurie, In my Dodemaide family 2 children burnt to death were not registered - possibly because their bodies weren't recognizable. In the case of drowning I believe they are not registered if the body is not found. ...about deaths which had occurred and an inquest had been held by the coroner. >>From memory unless the coroner specifically advised the BDM's on the >>completion of the inquest no record was recorded in the BDM's and I think >>that people were advised to look in the local papers of the area to > ascertain details of the deaths as the inquests were usually well covered > by the local press...
Hi Anne, Some years ago on one of the Victorian lists this conundrum came up about deaths which had occurred and an inquest had been held by the coroner. >From memory unless the coroner specifically advised the BDM's on the completion of the inquest no record was recorded in the BDM's and I think that people were advised to look in the local papers of the area to ascertain details of the deaths as the inquests were usually well covered by the local press.- Sorry that I can not be of any more help. I think the cases were in the Ballarat area and would have been pre 1865ish. Hi Everyone, Just to clarify - Anne is chasing is the old Stratford Station cemetery, which is in the Parish of Stratford. So when they surveyed the new cemetery, which was in the Parish of Nuntin, it was officially gazetted as the Nuntin Cemetery. I THINK it now has both Stratford and Nuntin on the gates, as people get confused looking for the Nuntin Cemetery (which is on all death certificates), and think that isn't it, as that is the Stratford Cemetery. For those who are now confused, the Nuntin Cemetery is the one on the left on the highway, after you go under the railway viaduct and head towards Sale. The Stratford Cemetery (ie the original one) is over near Weir's Crossing, on the Avon. Dear All, Researching Lett/ MacDonald/ Manning of Gippsland. I have had considerable help this year from the list. You may have seen my previous email bemoaning the loss of most of the data. Any info on these families or on early Gippsland, Stratford, Sale etc I would be thankful for. Linda I do still have the photos of the headstones - they were backed up before whatever insidious ailment of the hard drive took hold. If any of you have previously sent information, it is quite possible I no longer have it. If I have sent you BDM certificates or information I probably no longer have that either and would much appreciate someone flicking it over this way. Yours in shock and devastation, Elizabeth
Dear Anne, I have been researching Lett and MacDonald of Stratford/Nuntin. William Lett died at his property 'Williamsvale' in 1862, Marion McDonald died at Nuntin in 13th August 1862. this info came from Vic BDM. I am sure that others of the family died at Stratford. The information I have given you I have on card file system but not on computer. I had purchased the family BDM certificates and had compiled quite a bit of info about Stratford and the family but as of this week am pretty much starting from scratch [devastating] after loss of hard drive and discovery that most of my backed up files were corrupted. There is a lesson in this I am sure but just at the moment I am too shocked to figure it and just feel the loss. Needless to say if you have any information on the Lett/ Macdonald / Manning families of Gippsland or on Gippsland history I would very much appreciate any you can pass on.
