I am currently writing an article for the Frigon Family Association in Quebec Canada re the Fregon family from Omeo. http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~fregon/ John Fregon (Jean Frigon) emigrated from Canada on the Ocean Eagle in 1852 and found his way to Omeo with other French Canadians looking for gold. He married Elizabeth McCoy in 1864 and they had 12 children. They found that there was more money to be made supplying the miners needs than digging for gold. Elizabeth and John and their family were involved with several Hotels down the Omeo Highway including the Golden Age at Omeo which after it was burnt down in the early 1890's Elizabeth rebuilt it as the magnificent three story structure that was destroyed in the 1939 fires. John and Elizabeth ran the Golden Age for a year or too before john died in 1886. but she only ever leased the new building. I am particularly looking for any Fregon family photos plus and this is the real hard one a Photo of the Tongio Hotel at Tongio. I have pictures of all the other "Fregon" Hotels. Thanks John Riddell

Hi Pam, I wonder if you'd be kind enough to send me the death cert of HECTOR BARTLETT again. He was father of Susan Bartlett. [He did away with himself]. Hi Everyone, Old Gippstown holds the medals issued to the mother of Nicholas TACKABERRY, born 1884 at Warragul to Nicholas TACKABERRY and Sarah Jane WHITE. He was serving with the 8th Light Horse when he was killed in action during the battle for Lone Pine at Gallipoli, August 1915. At that time his mother was living at Yarragon (although sometimes also said to be at Trafalgar), and his father had died. Nicholas TACKABERRY was single at the time of enlistment, and described as an orchardist from Marong. He had at least six brothers and sisters all born Warragul / Buln Buln, but at least three failed to survive infancy. His mother died at Warragul in 1938. If there is anyone out there connected with the family, or anyone else who could help, Old Gippstown would very much like to obtain a photograph of Nicholas TACKABERRY, or any other details of the family. Regards Linda
To all those who answered my recent query re bushfires at the Prom in 1939: especially, Eric, Carl, Jenny, Ruth, Richard and David, I've received the answer from my original enquirer who had been called away from the Prom to fight the recent fires in the remote high country. The Victorian Naturalist (date unknown) carried a story on historic fire events in Wilsons Promontory beginning with the first recorded wildfire observed from a ship rounding the southern end of the park in January 1863. This was reported in the Gippsland Guardian at the time. Outbreaks were recorded over the years but in the summer of 1939, a fire 'started between Darby Saddle and Squeaky Bay, burnt two-thirds of park over a week, including extensive areas of heath south of Mt Hunter, east of airstrip, but not Sealers Cove, Lilly Pilly Gully or Mt Vereker [24.4.39] (Foster Mirror 27.7.39, Age 13.1.39).' Thank you all for your suggestions and interest. Cheers Shirley

Dear All, I made a plea on your list for any information on a piece of scrimshaw carved by one of my rellies, Nathaniel Myers. Nathaniel was related to all of the above Gippsland families, and I've spent fruitless hours trying to locate this piece of scrimshaw among various relatives in Gippsland and further afield since I first found mention of it. Your list was as helpful could be, but to no avail. Last night I was reading a book which mentioned a scrimshaw collection, so I resolved to Google this morning for that collection, held in W.A., but once again to no avail. I then tried the Armstrong collection, with a similar lack of success. Finally, as an absolute last resort, I just typed in the single word 'scrimshaw'. Hey presto, the first item to come up was: "The Nathaniel Myers scrimshaw collection"!!!! It/they? was/were purchased by the National Museum of Australia in 2005...what a Eureka moment that was! I've since contacted the museum, and plan to hot foot it up there ASAP! I rejoined the list this morning, as I thought there may be some on the list interested in my wonderful find: it just goes to show that persistence and tenacity still pay, sometimes... Best wishes, Carol Brill, Melbourne.
What a great discovery, Carol. Congrats! The exhilaration of finding something we've been searching for is indescribable. Greetings listers, I'm new to the list and hope someone out there can help me. I started my family history recently and it seems most of my father's relatives come from the Gippsland area. My paternal grandmother Vera May COOPER [1901-1985] was the daughter of George Astley COOPER [b. DuckPonds Vic, 1865] and Jessie HASTHORPE. Vera May COOPER married my future grandfather Clarence Alphonse GOODING [b. Tanjil 1890 - d. Perth 1975] in 1928. He was the son of William Charles GOODING and Marie Henrietta WUTTRICH [b.1863 Barrabool Hills - d. Tanjil 1945], daughter of Alphonse Leon WUTTRICH [arr Aust 1854]. The GOODINGs and HASTHORPEs are well covered in Settlers to Selectors by Joan Hasthorpe but I am keen to know more about the WUTTRICHs and if the COOPERs are known in the Gippsland area. I'll be in east Gippsland in December so will be able to chase down things if anyone has some leads for me to pursue. Janda Gooding (researching Gooding, Cooper, Hasthorpe, Gowans, Bevis, Wuttrich, Ceirinie and Varney families)

Congratulations Shirley, Your tenacity has paid off. Just goes to show that some big events can dominate history at the expense of smaller less publicised or remembered events. It would be unusual to say the least if the only bushfires in the summer of 1938/39 were on Black Friday and you've proven it. Hi Dale, and anyone else getting excited, Vision and Realisation has brief details of every school in the state. It does not include details of where records are held. The quote is from the website http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~surreal/AVG/Resources/Res-ws.html which relates only to Wellington Shire. There is a similar website for East Gippsland Shire at http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~surreal/AVG/Resources/Res-egs.html So it is no point asking me for information from anywhere else in the state. And best to check those websites (although a little out of date) if you are looking for something in those shires. The other tip is to search by place on the PROV website - I spotted some school records for Licola that way the other day. When I last saw them they were in a cupboard at Heyfield school, as when Licola closed they went to Glenmaggie as the next closest school, and when Glenmaggie closed, they went to Heyfield. regards Linda http://www.prov.vic.gov.au/ At 12:56 PM 20/01/2008 +1000, Dale wrote: >Hi Linda, me again! > >Would you please check your records for Collingwood Primary School from 1885 >to approx. 1900. There is a book called "Vision and Realisations" which lists all the schools in Victoria with a short history of each school. Sometimes it lists a few of the Headteachers. The book was published by the Victorian Education Dept and should be available your S.A. State Library.
