Hi Debbie I have several relatives who signed, inc my GGrandmother. However she did not sign while living in Gippsland, but she moved there between 1899 and 1903. She is buried at Orbost. By your phrasing, you are only interested in those who were living in the gippsland area at the time of signing (for the purposes of your research that is). Is that right? Hmm... I have a Sarah Jane Wigg (nee Horne) of Bairnsdale who signed, but as she is collaterall on my tree I don't know much about her. Her sister Mrs F Henderson (nee Horne) of Bairnsdale also appears to have signed. Otherwise all the others come vrome elswhere in Victoria. Have a good day Tia McCombes ----- Original Message ---- From: Deb <debbie.squires@bigpond.com> To: aus-vic-gippsland@rootsweb.com Sent: Sunday, 16 March, 2008 10:31:20 PM Subject: [AVG] Gippsland women on the Suffrage Petition Hi Listers, Some of you may have heard me recently on our local ABC talking about the Gippsland content of the 1891 Women's Suffrage Petition. I am currently trying to collate biographic details of these women plus, if I can find them, images of them also. I have already found some abnomolities and other tit bit's of info - for instance - where one sister has been living / visiting another and signed the petition at the sister's address. Also some names that have been mistranscribed. Anyone with any info about these women or about the process of how the signing of the petition actually happened would be appreciated. I bought my first copy of "Better off in a Home" at Morwell Newsagency in 1986, paying $6.95. It was signed by Bill. It mentioned the Yacht Club and the Commodore Mr Morwick, who had his own motorcar. Several years later I was shown a letter, in the papers of Mr Morwick's estate, from the Kildonan home, thanking him and his friends for the happy time the children had enjoyed by the sea at Williamstown that Christmas time. Hi Everyone, Just the usual reminder, amidst the most interesting conversation going on, about trimming the excess old messages off the bottom of posts returning to the list. Some newbies don't know about this. In the current temperature, I can feel the Digest members going into meltdown. Not aimed at anyone in particular - just rostered time for the list-admin to have a bad hair day. Just highlight and delete from the message before replying to the list. And changing the subject line to have some meaning helps too - some people get so many messages they don't bother to open posts they cannot relate to. Cheers Linda List-admin AUS-VIC-GIPPSLAND
Hello Chris and listers, If you can get hold of it, it's a wonderful little book. It's written from the naive view of a young boy involved but because of his youth not aware of the undercurrents ... but revealing them without realizing it. My interest originally was because the children were sponsored at Christmas by the Williamstown Yacht Club and stayed in the infant hall of the Williamstown school. But I was so fascinated, I actually purchased two copies, one of them secondhand. Better Off In a Home by Bill Smith. A good read. There has been a history written on Kilmany Park Boys Home by one of its residents who lived in Maffra, their name totally escapes me as does the title of the book. There is most likely a copy in the Maffra Library. Majella if you are reading this you may remember who it was. The daughter and her parents particularly her mum who often attended with her daughter had a lot to do with the Resource Centre. Age does not serve my memory well. Hello Gippsland Can anyone advise of the email address for Dawn Crowley? Contact me off list at shorten@alphalink.com.au Thanks John Shorten
Hello Linda, Thanks for your reply. My guess is Eliz. Was born abt 1859 or 1861, she is listed 3rd on her mothers death certificate in 1920, information was given by the youngest son Ernest. When married in 1880 she gives her age as 19 years old and birth place as Bairnsdale. Births of siblings are as follows George b 1858 Tarraville, Robert Atkinson b 1860 Sale, Alfred Hashy b 1863, Mary Jane b 1865, Margaret b 1867, Sarah Hannah b 1869, Ellen Jane b 1872, Edith b 1874, Ernest Atkinson b 1877. All births after Robert were at Stratford. I don't know if they were consistently Presbyterian, I guess possibly not and the Anglican records could be worth a look. I only have the years 1865-1874 on my computer, and that is the only time the family appears in them. Roberts was based at Maffra - it is possible they were baptised by the Presbyterian minister from Sale. The register appears to be the province of the Minister, not the church. When he travelled, all sorts of people appeared in it. About what year would you suggest Elizabeth Lake was born, and do you feel they would have been consistently Presbyterian - or are some of the others you quote born within the time range of the Roberts baptisms? If they were, and they are not there, there was an active Methodist Church in Stratford, where no records have been located. The Anglican records for Stratford are, I think, held at Stratford, and can be accessed for a donation. Have you any idea where Elizabeth Lake thought she was born - such as on her wedding certificate? regards Linda At 11:16 AM 4/03/2008 +1100, you wrote: >I am unable to find the birth registration for my ancestor Elizabeth >Lake. <snip> ------------------------------- To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to AUS-VIC-GIPPSLAND-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message

I am unable to find the birth registration for my ancestor Elizabeth Lake. Have found the other nine siblings, they are George, Robert Atkinson, Alfred Hashy, Mary Jane, Margaret, Sarah Hannah, Ellen Jane, Edith, & Ernest Atkinson. Her parents are Robert LAKE (abt 1857-1926) buried at Stratford, & Jane Ann ATKINSON b. abt 1846, d Apr 1920 at Stratford and buried at Stratford. Does anyone know if there are any parish baptism records available? Regards Glenys Hunt
Is there a kind sole who has access and can read a death notice from the newspaper for Arthur J GRANGER who died 19 Dec 1989 Woodside Victoria. Regards Joan Bottle
Ruth Le Serve would you contact me please - computers crashed so no address for you. Thanks, Lorraine Standfield.
Hi Linda, I was going to advise you of the book Bullumwaal - Some Memories, but after taking it down from my bookshelves I noticed your name on the cover. However you could contact my wife's aunt Ina Scott a keen historian of Rupert St Bairnsdale and she may be able to offer some suggestions. Looking forward to the next issue of GHJ.
