There are NONE for Maffra, Stratford, Heyfield (see below), Briagolong, Yarram etc. You get a few for Foster, none for Leongatha. You get a few for Rosedale (probably an appropriate number for the town), and then Traralgon, Morwell etc are big and Warragul is appropriate. Bairnsdale has a lot. So what happened in Central Gippsland. Did someone lose the signatures? Did the newspapers in some areas campaign against it? (I would have thought that would be counter-productive). I wonder did the churches play a role? Or the Temperance movement. Or, more likely, did some leaders in each community take it on. And where they did, signatures were collected. And no-one put their hand up in Central Gippsland? Still seems a bit strange. Women in the Shire of Avon (and presumably elsewhere) had the vote in local government elections from the 1860s. So they must have known suggestions that "we'd all be ruined" if women were given the vote, were wrong. (The Heyfield ones seem to suggest there was a similar locality name around Buxton / Merton - although not far enough north to be the one still known around Myrtleford.) And speaking of women and the vote - Stratford Historical Society hopes to have the 1860s and 1888 shire voting rolls (including the women) out by May. Regards Linda

    3. South Australia was the first place in Australia to give women the vote in municipal and council elections in 1861. They could vote but they couldn't stand for office. In 1894 women were given the right to vote in parliamentary elections in S.A. again the first in Australia. The temperance movement would have generally supported the petitions as they were led by the WCTU (Women's Christian Temperance Union) who were of course closely linked with the Churches especially the protestant churches (not sure about the Catholic Church). Would the relative sizes of the places mentioned have been the same as now? For example Walhalla would have been a lot bigger then than now. 3. Hello all (again) I am doing a collective response (at this time) to all those who have responded to my request for biographical info and pics of the women who signed. I hope to get individual responses away to you in the next week or so, but work commitments and "life" presently prevent this. Could I just clarify and respond to a couple of the things mentioned in the responses..... * Once sufficient is collated to make it worthwhile I will put the database up through one of the societies/groups I am involved with for "web" access. So fear not another database to search is looming in the wings ....... * At this point - (though this may change) I am principally concerned with the signatures that appear in the Gippsland region and not of those women who had connections with Gippsland but signed elsewhere - but - as I said this may change and really depends on just how much information comes forward. In the ideal world we would have a database of ALL women who signed. (one day ..... maybe) * The error with the Goochnan entry for Picnic Point (which I also believe to be Goodman) was one of the first things I noticed when I looked at the digitised images. I beleive that there are a couple of other errors also. This is by no way a criticism of the magnificant job that has been done with the transcribing. It is purely "local knowledge" (and almost forty years of dealing with hand written records) that gives me an advantage when reading old documents. I am sure that other local researchers are in the same position to confirm the names. * The rational and actual physical process of who and how the petition was signed is of great interest. One of the things that I find most interesting is that areas of a remote and isolated nature (like Omeo, Walhalla and Orbost) have a high percentage of signatures - while other areas with denser settlement patterns and population and an easier terrain - like Sale - have no signatures. Thank you all .... I will be in touch individually to follow up on the information. Debbie Squires

    2. Neil & Marg Andrews
    3. Hi everyone, I wonder whether anyone knows where Don Macreadie got the photos for his book "Willung 1844-1980" ? On page 21 of this book is a photo of the students at Willung school in 1910. My father and his siblings make up 5 of the 18 students in this photo, and I am keen to get a decent copy of it, as it is the earliest photo we have of them. I understand the book is out of print, and Don himself doesn't have a copy of it anymore. Could anyone hazard a guess as to where the original photo would have come from? Marg in Qld

    3. For those who expected to see more signatures on the petition, bear in mind that these women would probably need to travel to do this. No telephones, radio or tv and probably in many cases only occasional newspaper to provide information it's not hard to see why they didn't sign. When you look at the terrain and the fact that they probably had children at home, endless chores, a horse for transport over rough and mostly muddy tracks through the bush ... I leave it to your imagination. Cheers Shirley

    3. Well, I'm very happy to say that my gt.gt.grandmother, Susan Tanner, signed at Traralgon. (Curious that I have at least 6 other women in various family lines who did not). As a widow she came to Australia in 1874 from Cork, Ireland, with her seven adult children and her husband's brothers and their families, to settle in Callignee, Gippsland. She signed the petition aged 76 but sadly died in 1899 before Women's suffrage became reality. Regards, Sandra PS: Mornington Peninsula FHS have just begun a group project along similar lines. Approximately 80 women on the Peninsula signed (most on the Port Phillip side, but none on the Western Port Bay side). We had admired the online bios that Casterton Historical Society had researched on women from their district, and quickly decided we should do the same, to help redress the balance of male-dominated local history.

I have a Sarah Jane Wigg (nee Horne) of Bairnsdale who signed, but as she is collaterall on my tree I don't know much about her. 3. Hi I have a number of relatives who signed this petition who were Gippsland based while others I am not sure about. For example I have relative who signed as Mrs. McDonald - Dunkeld, she is obviously one of mine, but I have 3 ladies who were all Mrs. McDonald. which one is it. I fear some women may not have wanted their husbands to know so initials were omitted. I have some who came from Gippsland but were living in other parts of Victoria in 1891, thus not sure if these of interest. 3. Hi Listers, I've just recently discovered and joined the Lindenow and Gippsland lists. I'm investigating my father Hughie Morrison's family history on his mother's side (the Anton and Harper families of Gippsland). But as my father died at 40 years, I would be pleased to hear from anyone in the Lindenow/Fernbank/Glenaladale/Bairnsdale areas who might have photos or information about Hughie who was raised on a farm at Iguana Creek, went to Glenaladale Estate School, played cricket and football for Glenaladale and Lindenow but died of cancer in 1953 leaving behind a wife and two small daughters (and a third about to be born), on a small farm near the Fingerboards at Fernbank. I'm trying to put together a profile of him, including his youth, sporting life, army service in WWII, brief marriage to my mother and our family life on the farm before his death. I found his 'Lindenow Football Club Premiers 1933' photograph in the 1992 publication 'History of Lindenow and District' by Judy Richardson and Margaret Treasure. Any information would be welcome.
