    3. Doug, Verdon was located on the Dargo High Plains Road near the northern edge of the Dargo High Plains, near Mt. Bluerag. See page 127 "Victoria's Forgotten Goldfields" by Christie & Gray. They mention a Post Office & some burials in the 1860s. Another excellent book is by Luke Steenhuis, can't think of the exact title and I have lent my copy. Also, History of Gold Discovery in Victoria, by James Flett. The approx years 1850-60 and there were recordings of burials in the local Cemetery, but finding it or the remains of the town seem to hold some mystery. 3. Hi Doug, Been digging since you wrote offlist - Found it! According to Luke Steenhuis in "Secrets of Ghost Towns of the High Country" page 23 "In 1867, a postal village named Verdon was recorded as being on the Dargo High Plains 4 miles south-west of Louisville. This was near the Conness Reef and Mt Blue Rag .... The post office closed in 1870" There is a little bit more in the book Cheers Linda At 04:20 AM 13/04/2008 -0700, you wrote: >Hi List, > I'm helping a friend locate a 'Ghost' town in the Dargo > area and seek any help on the matter I can get. 2. Sandra Beckett
    3. As you already have the reference from the fiche and page no. of the shipping list (from the Fiche indexes) or a reference to microfilmed lists, then it is necessary to go to the PRO in Melbourne to view the actual shipping lists on a reader/printer, and a copy can then be printed. Have a look at the PRO guide 050 for further details - it is available as a .pdf document via the PRO website. www.access.prov.vic.gov.au/public/PROVguides/PROVguide050/PROVguide050.j sp Also on the PRO site are the online lists of Unassisted Passengers from 1852-1923, and Assisted Passengers from 1839-1871. These are indexes of course, and you still have to visit the PRO to view the actual shipping list and get a print. Hope this helps, Sandra.

    3. Good afternoon all Does anyone happen to know anything about the Gippsland Tile Works? I have come across a building in Sale constructed c1950 or earlier that would appear to have terracotta tiles on the roof. However, upon closer inspection from underneath, the tiles have the appearance of concrete and have "Gippsland Tile Works" cast into them. I am hoping that someone may be able to tell me the approximate date/s this company manufactured tiles, and if they manufactured only concrete products or if, by chance, they produced terracotta tiles. Any info much appreciated. Anne Napier

But there are a great many Lay's about. Frederick Walter Lay was born 2 Apr 1903 in Orbost, the 7th of ten children born to Charles Maurice Lay and Annie Purvis. Do you require more info? Regards Glenys Hunt On Monday 7 Apr 2008 11.19 PM you wrote I read your emails with interest. You mention a Frederick Lay and I have two of them in my family tree. I also find it interesting that you are making enquiries about a person with the surname of Willis who I also have in my family. My question is are the two related in some way? Do they have any connections with Ballan or the Strzleckis (Carrajung, Willing South)? If they do then they could be my family and I have a mountain of information on the Lay family and some on the Willis. Can you tell me more about Frederick Lay?

    3. Thanks for that Sharon, The Giles brothers arrived at Lake View, Bengworden in 1865/6 and the family held the property for over 90 years before it was sold. The original brothers were John, Charles, James and James Francis. John was the manager of the Lake View property and a foundation member of the Bairnsdale Agricultural Society and Shire Council. He never married but Charles and Francis married Boyle cousins. Their family wre also living in the area at this time along with Hoffmans Blennerhassetts. All of these families are related and were from Co Kerry and they all had properties in the district. One, originally established by the Blennerhassett family is still owned and operated by the same family today. The Lake View property was both substantial and well-known in the district so I would expect it could be mentioned in any history of the area. Any lead you, or anyone can give me would be most appreciated. Sharon wrote: Hi Don Do you have any ideas of the dates and maybe names of the Giles, that were living around Bengworden / Goon Nure area, I have a book that mentions the family you are looking for. I believe there were 4 brothers who originally had a hand in establishing the property and that at least some of them were earlier involved in a fairly substantial overland trek from the Pentland Hills to Bengorden.
