Hello all I'm researching my g-grandmother's (Mary RYAN) first family as above. I have a lot of information to share with anyone else interested in these families. I would also love to hear anything about the origin of these names. I'm leaving Melbourne, Australia and will have to unsubscribe from the List until late October 1999 when I settle down in a new part of the world. I will be travelling until then. However, I'd love to hear from anybody by private e-mail. I'll access these, and reply, from libraries during my travels. My grateful thanks to the Listowner and all the people with whom I've had contact. In fact, to everyone (except the one person who was on some Lists and who caused problems for so many of us). Best wishes, Ron Jones ronjones@bigpond.com

Hi John, The Creswick Police Court Records would probably be at the Public Records Office in Cherry Lane Laverton. You will have to go there yourself to search for them but the staff at the record office are very helpful. You will be able to look at the actual records if they have them. I have found police records there before. regards, Lorene >Hi everyone. > >Can anyone tell me if records of proceedings of the Creswick Police >Court for 1863 still exist. Hi Carol. The name STORER rings a bell but I'm not sure why. A check of the Gippsland phone book has 12 listed in Sale, Maffra & Bairnsdale areas. I'll make an enquiry & see who is the most appropriate contact. I'll let you know by the weekend. In the mean time try J Storer, 25 Mitchell Street, Bairnsdale 3875 John Hill
Hi everyone. Can anyone tell me if records of proceedings of the Creswick Police Court for 1863 still exist. If so, where are they held and what is involved in geting access to them? John Hill

The first of Keith Fairweather's three books, "Time to Remember" is what he would seem to be looking for. It even includes diagrams. Keith's others are "Brajerak" which covers the Mount Wills/Sunnyside area and "Bedrock", which covers Bullumwaal and Deptford etc. I think they are all out of print, but I have seen copies at Elizabeth's Campbell's bookshop in Prahran, but it should be easy to get on inter-library loan if there isn't one in his local library. I responded June 29 to a query on the list from Julie <clifty@ludin.com.au> and sent considerable information on the Crawfords/Forsyths/Bullocks/Mills but received no acknowledgement. I'd be grateful to know whether the message was received. Regards, Lyn Wardle

A friend has asked me ask if anyone can tell him where he might find details about the mines at Cassilis, especially photographs and/or plans showing what various features were. He has made a video of a recent trip to the site and wants to add an accurate commentary. Yours, Jeremy Look me up at www.maffra.net.au/jjbpage.htm
Hi Listers. Have you have experienced difficulties using Maxi? I have and I told Maxi about them in April '99. No response was the loud reply. However, things have made a change for the better. I got a very quick response to my complaint e-mail and its attachment which sent to Maxi this morning, from: Richard Loriot Customer Service Coordinator maxi multimedia richard.loriot@maxi.com.au I suggest everyone who experiences difficulties with Maxi, e-mail Richard with the details. That should keep them on their toes and assist in getting Maxi functioning effectively. John Hill

I just have to tell everyone that this property does still exist, and is one of the most intact around, with a whole series of early buildings still there and quite beautiful. In fact, so lovely that I think I will photograph it tomorrow, and if the Deputy is his usual, obliging self, we will put them up on the AVG home page, just to let everyone see that there are still lovely finds out there for people to make in their families. For locals, it is well on the Stratford side of Mac's Gas (St Helens is opposite Mac's Gas) and has a large place name on the front. Thanks to abstracts in Gippsland Heritage Journal, I can tell anyone interested that in numbers 81 and 82 of the Maffra and District and Stratford and District Historical Societies Bulletin that a two-part series by Mary Lees (of Maffra?) covered her life on lighthouses at Cliffy Island, Wilsons Promontory, Deal Island, Gabo Island and Cape Otway, where her father was a lighthouse keeper. Thankfully, Jeremy, who will hopefully be reading this, will be able to write directly to Philip to advise him how he can get copies. Philip is at: "Philip Milward~patron" <nzlighthouse@xtra.co.nz> And I THINK I know who I have loaned my Bulletins collection to. The plans of these lighthouses, held in the Astralian Archives at Burwood, are often beautiful. There was a whole series of them from Gabo Island in the recent Builders and Buildings - Gippsland Exhibition. Dear Gippsland Heritage List Members: I have recently joined this list. I live at Mallacoota in the far east of your region where an active Historical Society meets monthly. I live here only from time to time and when not here am in Hobart - I like the libraries there. I do not think anyone in the Mallacoota Historicial Society is online yet but I am working on that for a lot has gone on in that society over the years and its archives are large. For example, I am sure that someone in that group would be able to help our NZ researcher, Philip Milward, who asked on 18 July: "Can anyone assist me with photos and histories,if available, of the following lighthouses so I can catalogue them for posterity ? " Point Hicks" , "Citadel Island" , "Cliffy Island". If you have information and photos of others such as "Wilsons Promontory" , "Cape Liptrap", "Cape Schanck" and " Gabo Island" I would be grateful but whereas I have some information and photos of them, I have nothing on the first batch of requests. The older the photos the better as I want to capture them in their "glory"." I can help to this extent that I know of a book by Dacre Smyth: "The Lighthouses of Victoria, a second book of paintings, poetry and prose," by Dacre Smyth, published by Dacre Smyth, printed by Crystal Offset Printers. I borrowed this book from the East Gippsland Library at Bairnsdale (from the Mobile Service which comes here twice a month) a few years back. I notice my notes record its title as "...Second Book..." so he must have also published a first. I recall that it was published in the 80s. I am also writing a story about Gabo Island and lighthouses which I will send later in a separate post to the list. It will be published in "The Mallacoota Mouth" this week and I do not want to steal their thunder. Wasn't that serendipitous that I had just finished the article as the digest from this group arrived? Is there anyone else from Mallacoota on this list now? Do let me know if so. Shirley, you asked about the Tasmania connection for the Sager family trip. There are many connections last century between Gippsland and Tasmania and please note a wonderful resource called The Tasmania Family History Service. Their web site is: tashistory@vision.net.au http://www.vision.net.au/~tashistory/ or join their mailing list at: http://www.vision.net.au/~tashistory/mailist.htm List owner is: <yostie@speed.net.au> or Reminder that you can post a Query to: TasGenWeb queries board: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/Australia/Tasmania TasmaniaGenWeb site may also be useful: http://www.rootsweb.com/~austas/index.htm Happy researching, everyone. The wonderful Port Albert Maritime Museum has information on some of these Gippsland lighthouses which were very important in the early navigation of Bass Strait. Regular shipping routes were established Tas-Vic-NZ from the early 1840s. Peter and Emma SAGER and their seven children lived at Grip Road, Toora, for 21 years from 1892-1913. Peter was a fisherman working from a 21 ft fishing boat. Family folklore has a story of he and his son, also Peter, sailing from Toora to Tasmania and back again. News of the planned trip reached Tasmania ahead of them so that there was a reception waiting to welcome their arrival across Bass Strait and to wish them safe return to Toora. It is believed this was reported in newspapers of the time around 1907. Does anyone have any information on this please? Shirley Westaway Foster

I wonder if there are any photo's etc. or whether any of the original property still exists? Anyone that can assist with this information will be gratefully received Yours Sincerely, Julie Simpson
