Dear Listers. Narre Warren or Pakenham Family History centres would be closer than Wonthaggi to Lang Lang. A member of the Mornington Peninsula Family History centre lives at Lang Lang. Neville Elvish Haysoms Road LANG LANG I am sure he would be helpful. Ann Burnell.
Dear Listers, If you need any information about the Castlemaine area I suggest you contact Pauline J Myers. She has a Family History Research Centre at her home and she specialises in Central Victorian records. Her address 12 Adair Street Maldon 3463 Tel. 054 751 214 I found her a fantastic help some years ago. If you are researching those who came to Victoria from Germany during the gold rush from the Niederweisel or Griesham areas Kelvin Williams 5 Curlew Crescent Burleigh Waters Queensland 4220 is the expert. He has researched all the families from those towns. Ann Burnell
Dear Kay, At Tooradin there is a little fisherman's Cottage which is open to the public at times which has a great deal of material and may have something about the Lang Lang area. When I visited there I found the person in charge very helpful but it was early days and nothing was catalogued. Worth a try. Ann Burnell

I suggest the Latrobe Valley Express for the Moe death(s) you want. Also Victorian deaths on microfiche now go up to about 1985, so see if you can get a look at a set at a Family History or Genie Society. Hi again Listers, I recently posted to the list about Woodburn which was originally owned by James Simpson and Thirza (nee' Widdon) and have been corresponding with Linda over that wonderful find..Thanks again Linda for your efforts...!! Now I am on the hunt for information on Thirza's parents Samuel Widdon and Grace (nee' Lee) and extended family... Samuel and Grace had a multitude of children: Thirza (1857), Ann Maria (1859), George Henry (1861), John Edward (1862),Samuel (1864), Alfred (1868), Sarah Grace Elizabeth (1873), William Alfred (1876), Frederick Charles (1878), Arthur (1886) All born in Yarram as far as I can tell. I have further information on marriages and descendants of these children that I would be happy to share with anyone interested. I would be appreciative of any information which could be brought to light on this family and their origins and descendants, in particular the marriage of Samuel and Grace. Thanks in advance, Regards, Julie Simpson

Hi List, In 1910 and 1911, the Stratford Cricket Team won the Wardrop Trophy, which appears to be a Gippsland-wide competition. They are currently researching their history, and would dearly like to know the history of this trophy, or who donated it/named it. Can anyone help???? Hi Listers, Banns were read in the Church of England in Foster in 1899 fpr my GP's marriage, and I also have a copy of their marriage certificate ( a Govt record). So both existed then. Likewise my parents in 1938 and my sister and I both had bans read in Foster Victoria) in 1968. Cheers Margerie Linton Greer
Dear List. Clipping from the Merimbula News Weekly 21 July 1999 page 3 Pioneer Register Interest is growing in the Bega Valley Genealogy Society's project to produce a biographical register of Pioneers who lived in the Bega Valley at any time prior to Federation. Make sure that your family is not forgotten by contributing a small family tree and other details about them. Send a stamped addressed envelope and the society will send you the appropriate forms, or pick them up by calling at the old court house and police station at Pambula during opening hours. Further information may be obtained from Ursula Hunt on (02) 64959690 or Mart Gainey on (02) 64959961 Hope someone out there finds this of interest, and no I'm not a member or affiliated in ANY way. Sorry, I will be sending this to all the lists I subscribe to, sorry if this bores or annoys some. Hi Listers, Having seen the recent discussion on marriage by licence I thought I'd contribute my two bob's worth. Several of my ancestors were also married by licence, some of them in church, so I don't believe that where you were married determined the need for a licence, although you probably did need if you wer not married in a church. I understand that in 18th and early19th century England it was customary for people to be married after banns had been called, or in special circumstances by a special licence for which they had to pay a large fee, and which had to be obtained from a bishop. Presumably you had to satisfy the bishop that you were not already married etc. when obtaining the special licence. It seems to have been restricted largely to very wealthy people or those in a particular hurry. Banns were much cheaper. The banns were read on 3 consecutive Sundays, allowing objectors time to come forth, and you didn't need a licence as well. I know banns were still read in the early years of settlement in NSW - there are lists of convict banns - but I don't know if we used them in Victoria. Certainly some of my ancestors were married by licence before compulsory civil registration of marriages, which I believe was 1st July 1853 in Victoria, so presumably it wasn't just civil registration that led to this requirement. Perhaps the need for a licence was an early form of revenue raising by our state government. This was gold rush time, and the same government imposed the miners' licence fees that eventually led to the Eureka Stockade. Perhaps someone out there knows the facts and can enlighten the rest of us as to when it became compulsory to have a marriage licence in Victoria, and why people would have obtained one if they didn't have to by law. Did we ever use banns in Victoria? Sandra Glass
Hi Sandra When My husband and I got married we had to post Banns. This was in Victoria (Caulfield) and it wasn't last century folks!\ It was actually 1967, and three weeks before the Banns went up. No one objected then, but plenty have since! He he. Hi All, Would I be right in thinking Lang Lang is covered by the South Gippsland FH Soc? Does anyone know where their Research rooms are and when they are open? Also where is the Lang Lang cemetery? TIA Kaye. Churchill, Victoria, Australia. Email: oretk@i-o.net.au
Mavis Walker where are you? In an early edition of "The Gippsland Heritage Journal" ( No 9 ), Mrs Mavis Walker of Bendigo published a notice requesting information about Henry John Mitchell ( son of Joseph ). This of course is the very same Henry John Mitchell that we are researching, so I wrote to Mrs. Mavis Walker hoping to exchange information with her. Unfortunately the current resident of her address as published, wrote to me saying that he had no knowledge of a Mrs. Mavis Walker and that he had lived at that address for six years. Would I be lucky enough to have Mavis, or somebody who knows her, read this and help me contact her? Barry
On the local radio news this morning, it was reported that the Copper Mine Hotel at Coopers Creek (south of Walhalla, east of Erica) burnt down on Wednesday night or Thursday morning. Apparently only the chimneys are left standing. The hotel was reported to be 100 years, and a picture taken of it, earlier this year, is in the AVG picture gallery at http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~surreal/AVG/pic2.html/ Regards Peter Lakeman
Hi everyone. A must read for anyone researching families associated with the Victorian gold fields in the mid 1800's is: Nothing but GOLD - The Diggers of 1852 by Robyn Annear - published by Text Publishing ISBN 1 976485 07 8 $25 paper back at a book shop near you. Thanks to Denece for letting us know that: Keiths books have been reprinted and are available at bookshops in Bairnsdale Regards Denece The first of Keith Fairweather's three books, "Time to Remember" is what he would seem to be looking for. It even includes diagrams. Keith's others are "Brajerak" which covers the Mount Wills/Sunnyside area and "Bedrock", which covers Bullumwaal and Deptford etc. I think they are all out of print, but I have seen copies at Elizabeth's Campbell's bookshop in Prahran, but it should be easy to get on inter-library loan if there isn't one in his local library.
Hello all I'm researching the above family for my sister in law. She is gathering information to share with anyone else interested in these families. I would also love to hear anything about the origin of the name. I'm leaving Melbourne, Australia and will have to unsubscribe from the List until late October 1999 when I settle down in a new part of the world. I will be travelling until then. However, I'd love to hear from anybody by private e-mail. I'll access these, and reply, from libraries during my travels. My grateful thanks to the Listowner and all the people with whom I've had contact. In fact, to everyone. Best wishes, Ron Jones ronjones@bigpond.com
