MEDIA RELEASE The Australian Institute of Genealogical Studies is to have a new home in the new year - the 1930s National Trust building, the Box Hill Town Hall. The Whitehorse Council approached the Institute with the offer some months ago, and arrangements have been made for the lease of the premises, to the satisfaction of both parties. The Institute saw the location as a solution to the problem of lack of space in their current Library, which they have outgrown in just four years. The new venue is 5 times larger than their current one and will allow many activities to be carried out simultaneously, which at present is impossible. President Don Grant says this will enable us to provide better services and facilities for our members. We will also be working alongside the Box Hill Historical Society, which should complement each others' activities. The new premises will allow for a large volunteers' work area, lunch area, more fiche and film readers, larger books area, separate office, reception, booksales plus bright and spacious classrooms. Box Hill Area Meetings will be held in the large and comfortable meeting room. Further information may be available at the AIGS' Open Day, World Vision on Saturday 23rd October. Faye Guthrie Senior Vice-President

I am seeking information on a hotel in Trafalgar c1910-1930 owned by John and/or Julia O'Brien. I believe John O'Brien also had a hotel in Traralgon during the period 1900-1935(?) Can anyone tell me how many hotels there were in these towns during that period or know of these O'Briens? My ggGrandfather (Francis Conley) died in the Club Hotel Moe on 4th May, 1889, does anyone know if this hotel still exists? Would appreciate any advice. ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com

The Orbost Butter Factory (and that may be only its "common" name) probably went through a heap of name changes and ownerships. The Orbost Butter and Produce Co. Ltd was registered as a co-operative 18 May 1892, and was still operating in 1911 (Greg Brinsmead, Gippsland Heritage Journal no.3). Like all the other factories in Gippsland it will have been slowly absorbed within the co-operative structure, which is now almost totally represented by the Murray Goulburn Co-operative, with its closest factory to Orbost still operating at Maffra. I do know that by some time in the 1970s the milk from Orbost was being carted to Maffra, but even then the Butter Factory building MAY still have been open as a depot. So the closure would have been so gradual it would be difficult to say when it actually happened. Does anyone know the date when the above factory closed down.?
Hi List, I have just found a cemetery that has previously escaped me!!!!! I was not aware how large the Gormandale Cemetery is. I now realise it was in the previous shire of Rosedale (therefore now in Wellington), and it was not previously transcribed by Sale Family History Group. Sale, following the success of their Sale Cemetery fiche, are now updating transcripts for all other cemteries in Wellington shire (less the former Alberton shire) and will be releasing them on fiche. But Gormandale slipped through the net. Can anyone from Yarram or Mid Gippsland Genealogical Societies confirm that they do not hold transcriptions??? Hi list Does any one have Peter Synan E-mail address and if they do could they send it to me so I can contact him Thank you Glenn
Congratulations to Peter Synan, from Sale, for receiving a largeish (well, it looks large to me) grant to advance his work on George Henry Wise, Member of Federal Parliament for Gippsland, and his involvement in Federation. Also noticed Dr Tom Griffiths (who did much work in the Maffra Shire, and around the Noojee area) has received an even larger one for a history of Antarctica. Their daughter Caroline married Martin Nicholls and by 1886 were living in Bairnsdale. Family who may still be in the area would be descended from Nellie Nicholls and Frank Holloway, who was a bootmaker. Another related surname is Reid. Thanks Marcia Penny Geelong
Thomas and Caroline were at the "Cat and Fiddle Inn" Sowton, 6 miles east of Exeter, Devon from 1831 until their emigration in 1849. They married in London in 1826, but think they had probably gone up there in search of work, as they came back to Colaton Raleigh, Caroline's home town by 1831. What is your interest in Devon Penny's? Regards Marcia aytonec wrote: > Hi, do you Penny's come from the DEVON region in Eng back further >
My great uncle Ernest Watt was employed in 1880's as an auctioneer/broker for M.Goold - Bairnsdale. In January 1889 he married Ellen Kirwan who is shown stepdaughter of M.Goold - Bairnsdale. I am trying to determine the natural parents of Ellen and believe she may have been born in Ingleside in 1856 and her father was possibly Francis Kirwan and mother was a Katherine Cussen. Presumably M.Goold from Bairnsdale would had to go through some formal adoption process of Ellen Kirwan. Does anyone know where the details of this would be kept. ie the Office of Births, Deaths and Marriages. Perhaps some kind Bairnsdale historian has some info, as I understand M (Michael I think) Goold was quite well known and was a Councillor. Regards Bruce Watt

Hi all, I am trying to find any information on Bert McNaulty/McAnulty who I believe resided in Gippsland from 1926 onwards. I believe he has died but I would like to make any connection to his family, as I am writing a book on his mothers family. I know his parents were Florence Edith and William McNaulty/McAnulty, and Bert was related to the Blackwell Family of Nar Nar Goon area. Any help appreciated. kind regards, Lorene
