    2. Robert Luxton
    3. Having been following messages on the list for some time with much interest and no enlightenment, I have a question for anyone who might be able to help: My great grandmother, Mary Ann Bruce, is a minor mystery. The family record seems reliable, as far as it goes. Born Allenvale, Tasmania 18 Feb., 1846, arrived Gippsland 1857. Married Charles Henry Gales at Maffra, 21 Dec., 1867. Parents shown as James and Ann Bruce, of Allendale [sic] Tasmania. I need to know how, when and where Mary Ann came to Gippsland, to help determine for certain who her Tasmanian relatives are. I believe I know, but have no proof. Robert Luxton New Lambton, NSW

    2. Fi Cutting
    3. G'day. My great-grandparents Alma POOLE and Edward James KEPPLER were living on a dairy farm in Amey's Tk, Foster, when he died in 1930; the farm belonged to their son Ted, and his brother Tom was also in the area. When Ted Keppler left Foster soon after 1930 his mother stayed on for some time with her daughter Hazel and Hazel's husband Alan DENT, who owned the local garage. Does anyone have any knowledge of these families - photos, anecdotes or whatever - that might help me to build up a picture of their lives in Gippsland? There was also a farmhand called Jim McMAHON who was associated with the dairy farm: does this name ring any bells? Thanks. Fi

    3. Hi List, In passing, it has occurred to me that there might be someone out there interested in "Adopting" a shire, to put details up on the AVG Web page. I am maintaining Wellington and East Gippsland, but don't have the knowledge to do any of the other shires. It could even just start with a list of the places that are in that shire. If you are not sure what I mean, check out the AVG Home page, under Resources: http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~surreal/AVG/ Shires "vacant" at the moment are La Trobe, South Gippsland, Baw Baw, Bass Coast and Cardinia. ============= And another new web site is up and running: http://members.xoom.com/morwell/index.htm Congratulations Morwell Historical Society. ============== And I know Meredith at the Centre for Gippsland Studies is lurking on this list. So I REFUSE to post any details about the CGS garden history conference on the last Saturday in October, at Churchill. She is going to have to come on line and do it herself. But the good news is that Wellington Shire is in the process of commissioning a full bibliography of historical works (published and unpublished) for the Wellington Shire, from the Centre for Gippsland Studies. It will hopefully be published at some time in the future on the net. This will make it really easy then to know what histories are available for towns/areas in the shire (at the last count there were at least seven histories for Briagolong) Cheers Linda Barraclough Briagolong List Owner: AUS-VIC-GIPPSLAND email: kapana@netspace.net.au http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~surreal/AVG/

    2. Walter Savige
    3. Listers, Some of us would like to see more messages whereby listers briefly describe events in the lives in Gippsland of their forebears. Linda suggests that l set the ball rolling by re-telling the story about the arrival of my grandmother at Narracan. Mrs Annie Savige (wife of Thomas Smith Savige) and her three young children Sam, Hannah and baby Ern, her (also young) sister Lucy Powell and a male cousin Will Powell arrived at Narracan in May 1875 (before the advent of the Gippsland Railway). They travelled along the "old" Sale Road from Melbourne, passing through "old" Moe to the Haunted Hills, turning off along McDonald's Track - up a steep incline for about eight miles to the selection of Annie's husband Thomas beside Narracan Falls in the heavily forested hill country. In her twilight years, Mrs Lucy Bell (at the instigation of her grand-daughter Mrs Katie Wright) described the journey, which I retell below. Walter Savige "The Journey up to Narracan in 1875 took six or seven days from Collingwood. My sister Annie, her two young sons, Sam five years old and Ern, a baby in arms, a carpenter, a cousin from Adelaide who did most of the driving, and another selector, all in a covered dray with two horses, piled to the hilt with various belongings and horse feed. We must all have walked a lot of the way. I think the men did all of it . . . We had lovely Autumn weather and camped each night beside one of the various creeks. Some of the names I remember Sunny Creek, Brandy Creek and Cannibal Creek. First night at Oakleigh where men were at work on the Gippsland Railway line. We passed gangs of them, right up to Moe. The roads were pretty soft after Oakleigh and included the noted "gIue pots". Our cousin Will must have been a very good driver. The men slept in or under the dray. We youngsters and Annie in a tent which they rigged up each night. I was eleven then and loved every minute of that trip. I think so now, anyhow I do in retrospect! At Moe a sudden storm came on after the nippers were in bed. The tent blew down and we were all carried or dragged to the Moe Hotel. Another thrill for the small fry - sleeping in an Hotel room. Lots of navvies were there, working on the railway line. They looked at us rather interestedly I think we were the only children anywhere about. Next day, over the Haunted Hills and up McDonald's Track we reached our destination - a log hut at Narracan, another thrill! Bunks across the far end, a doorway and fireplace at the other. A sack was the door and the fireplace was uprights in a semicircle. A camp oven, like a very heavy frying pan with a handle over the top, hung over the fire."

    3. Hi Listers, I don,t know where the elephant is buried in Stratford, but there is one buried in Foster!! It died when a circus was visiting - supposedly ate a weed that didn't suit its metabolism. The late Dr Robert Fleming of Foster used to love telling the story of how one Saturday afternoon, in the 1950's, a yellow Rolls Royce pulled up at his place, and a fellow got out and said, " Hello Doc, my elephant's a bit crook and I wonder if you could take a look at it?" There was no vet in Foster in those days. I well remember going down to where the circus was setting up, and seeing the dead beast. Its one of those things people talk about at reunions. Only last week I heard that there was another elephant that escaped in the Woodside area years ago! Perhaps you could start a register of Gippsland elephants Linda?
